Hit the trail
If you’re eager to make the most of these beautiful spring weekends, consider picking up a ticket for The Susquehanna Heartlands Wine Trail. The trail, which will continue through the month of March, showcases seven of the region’s wine producers and offers participants the opportunity to win prizes, while sampling some of the finest wines Pennsylvania has to offer. According to Carolyn Zimmerman of Shade Mountain Winery, Middleburg, the trail is in its eighth year and has “grown tremendously since the idea was conceived.” Each winery purveys a unique selection of vintages, offering something for every palate. Zimmerman said the climate and soil of the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys lends its own unique nuances to the region’s wines. In addition, “each vineyard’s grapes have their own special taste and characteristics.” Shade Mountain Winery produces more than 40 varieties of wine: “We have dry, sweet, fruit, grape — we even have a grape mead,” she said.
