This Sunday at Covenant Central ...
Toe tapping, finger snapping — allowed. Sunday’s worship service at Covenant Central Presbyterian Church, 807 W. Fourth St., is expected to offer moments of traditional praise, but it also will feature selections of sacred jazz performed by church and guest musicians. The church tried it before, and it was such a success, the musicians are hitting the notes again. After all, Psalm 100:1 says, Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, but it doesn’t specify what style of music. “I don’t think God minds if we tap our toe or snap our finger,” church Choir Director Tom Shellenberger said. Nancy Marchal, church organist and pianist, agrees. She said she considers the second sacred jazz service a “labor of love.” Pastor Paul Doriani is eagerly anticipating the swing music to fill the sanctuary. He has invited guest musicians Dick Adams, a saxophonist, Tim Breon, who plays string bass and Bob Morrison, on drums to join Shellenberger, the choir and Marchal in the performances.
