Oregon State wide receiver James Rodgers (8) is tackled by Penn State defenders Saturday during the first half at Beaver Stadium in State College. Penn State won 45-14.
STATE COLLEGE — Defensive end Jerome Hayes got knocked down, then he got up again. Then he fell back down. Hayes’ season is likely over after an assumed ACL tear on his left knee, one year after suffering an ACL tear on his right knee. He needed help off the field after taking a hit in the second half of a 45-14 Penn State victory over Oregon State Saturday at Beaver Stadium. It was another setback for a Nittany Lion team already dealing with suspensions of Maurice Evans, Abe Koroma, and Andrew Quarless after campus police seized marijuana in their apartment last week. But it’s not the kind of adversity that will determine if this team is anywhere near deserving of some of the 1994 or 2005 comparisons from the preseason. No, that will come later in the Big Ten, because it likely won’t happen much in the next two games at Syracuse and vs. Temple. The 1994 team never really knew what it was made of until rallying at Illinois.
