Bill George to retire as Pa. AFL-CIO president
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Bill George is retiring as president of Pennsylvania's AFL-CIO after 20 years as one of the state's most visible organized labor leaders.
The 68-year-old George told The Associated Press on Thursday that he'll step down sometime after his successor is elected at the labor federation's convention in Pittsburgh next month.
His term expires June 1, but he says he plans to stay on the board as president emeritus and to remain active in this year's major political campaigns.
George said the convention will mark not only the group's 50th anniversary but his 50th anniversary as a union member. He started as a steelworker in Aliquippa in 1960.
