The technology to collect and remit sales tax for all states is there and pretty simple. The reason on line retailers don't want to collect it is that it adds a bit of expense to do business--an expense that regular retailers already have--and it makes their prices seem cheaper. Look, you have to have your purchase delivered, so the seller should collect the tax to help with roads, police, etc. Not a big deal, it makes sense.

Installing a sales tax to online purchases as prescribed by commentors already makes sense, period. They're going to raise taxes anyway, we can agree on that right? So why not 'raise them' in a place that makes sense.
