Dwight Eisenhower warned us to beware of the Military Industrial Complex. Too bad we didn't listen. No matter who is in office since the mid 1940's, the United States has been occupying other countries in the name of freedom or democracy. No matter if a Democrat or Republican is in office, always expect foreign intervention with our military. The same policies have been in place for almost 70 years.

In regards to the politicians getting a pay cut, while I agree in principle, in the end it will make no difference. The deficit is beyond the politicians' control now. Until we look at our foreign policy (the American Empire and never ending wars) and our domestic policy (the corporate/banking welfare state and the Federal Reserve's attack on the dollar) don't hope for old America to return.

"I read this morning that Syria is going to assist Iran in building a missile defense system, which will mostly to be used against our only ally in the mid-east, Israel." - John D. Haller

A "Missle Defense System" cannot be used against any country. By design it is not an offensive weapon. If it truly is a "Missle Defense System", the only thing that it could be used for is to defend against an attack FROM Isreal.

There are 535 members of Congress, not 545.

My question....why in God's name do we send billions after billions of foreign aid to those countries in the middle east who hate our guts and vote against us in most UN votes?" - John D Haller

I wouldn't say Israel "hates" us. They merely do a very effective job o' hu$tling us, due to our sense of Judeo-Christian "obligations".

...Making a handful o' weapons-development/production investor$ EXTREMELY rich/influential in our political-process; THE point Eisenhower was making!!!!

"We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted INFLUENCE, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of MISPLACED POWER exists, and will persist."

I don't know much about Missile Defense Systems, so I have a Question.

Once a "Missile Defense System is in place... What would prevent it from being converted into a "Missile Offense System ?

One I suspect would be it's missile guidance systems, the second would be it's firepower value upon impact vs cost.

I wonder what percentage of the population can find Syria on a map.

@mazmdm

Are you referring to my post that read "There are 535 members of Congress, not 545."

That post was to correct the letter writer's incorrect assertion that there are 545 members of Congress.

One would think that before writing a letter to two United States Senators and a member of the House of Representatives that the letter's contents would be factually correct, but evidently, not so.

I was referring to your comment about finding Syria on a map. I would hope that everybody on the comment board knows where Syria is located.
