Fiscal cliff: Lack of spine, partisanship block real solution

January 5, 2013

As is so often the case, when faced with a legitimate crisis – the fiscal cliff – President Obama, with the help of a complicate big media to do his damage control, a divided Congress and a partisan......

"Someone needs to take an objective look at a spending cuts list developed by Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. It cuts a ton from the federal spending menu without touching major military, education, Social Security or Medicare spending."

We've (already) seen the "upside" o' Herr Ryan's agenda....developed in the 1940s.

"Rand viewed the CAPITALISTS, not the workers, as the PRODUCERS OF ALL WEALTH, and the WORKERS, not the capitalists, as USELESS PARASITES."

The Los Alamos example is a good one. If someone worked for a private company, and screwed up to that level, heads would roll. How many "Los Alamos" situations happen every year at a huge cost to taxpayers?

MrShaman, what is your suggestion to help bring down the debt and stop wasteful spending?

"As is so often the case, when faced with a legitimate crisis the fiscal cliff President Obama, with the help of a complicate big media to do his damage control, a divided Congress and a partisan Senate, failed to solve the problem." Four thoughts: First, I don't remember the writer of these editorials considering the fiscal cliff a legitimate crisis. At the time Congress and the President agreed to create this potential cliff, the editorials railed against it as they rail against the current situation. Second, "complicate" should be "complicit". Third, I really doubt this editorial was written locally. The locally written editorials display a level of writing one would expect from a professional writer. Fourth, I do agree that mainstream (NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN etc.) media is skewed to the left. Of course other media (O'Reilly, Hannity for example) are just as skewed to the right.

If there's enough blame to go around, why add, "but especially the president and the Democrat leaders in the Senate and House?" I didn't see much leadership coming from the other side of the aisle, either.

I had ZERO problems with eliminating ALL Bush tax-cuts...and, returning (in their entirety) to the Clinton tax-rates!

See:

Tax Cuts Don't Boost Revenues - TIME

"If there's one thing that Republican politicians agree on, it's that slashing taxes brings the government more money.

If there's one thing that economists agree on, it's that these claims are false.

...Reagan's tax cuts for the nonrich were big money losers, and it took the fiscal discipline of Bill Clinton to mop up the resulting red ink."

"For instance, about $214 million has been spent on a sophisticated new security system at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. The system was supposed to have been in operation last summer.

But it doesn't work. The government says it will take six months and $41 million more to make the system functional."

I'm guessing this is the same reason we're no-longer hearing about something as absurd as a fence, all along our border with Mexico.

Please list all wasteful spending that you are factually aware of. Let's just see what everyone finds wasteful.
