"Try living on $1,400 per month in Social Security"

Social Security was designed to be a supplement, not a retirement income. If over the course of your life, you were unable to save for retirement, perhaps you couldn't afford to retire.

I know people who are working and trying to live on this amount, paying for health insurance (if they can get it), ever increasing rents, food, fuel, etc.

As far as SS being a supplement, yes that's true. But someone please explain to me how a person is supposed to save hundreds of thousands of dollars for retirement when nearly every dollar earned is needed for housing, food, fuel, etc.? Few companies have pensions, and investing in a 401K leaves one to the whims of the stock market. Money saved in a savings account earns next to zero interest. My bank pays 0.15 percent.

Not everyone has the opportunity to work at a high wage job and save enough money to retire, and not everyone is physically able to work until they die.

Reeder needs to get a clue. It will be harder to save this year since every working man will be bringing home less $ due to our presidents policies. I want to thank everybody that voted for Obama. GREAT JOB

As a fellow retiree, I agree totally with Bill. My wife had serious medical problems all her life so we couldn't put alot of money away for retirement. When she died I got her share, but it wasn't that much. I ended up selling the house and renting to keep costs down. I'm glad you are in such great financial shape Reeder- your president will need more and more of your money.

I'm with you johnZook....and CHayes....you 'talk' like jerk! If ...through life's circumstances....SS is all you have; then you must be one really lucky person to dump on those that only have SS. I probably live on what you jerks waste in a month!

Sorry Andy, but SS was never meant to be a retirement plan. It was meant to be a stop gap from falling into dire poverty, and it does just that.

You will be bringing home less because Congress did not pay for all they agreed to. Tax cuts have a cost to them that was not paid, wars have a price and cost that was not paid, Costs of insuring the uninsurable like the elderly went up by Congress did not pay for it. It is not the Democrats or the Republicans it is Congress period they control the purse strings. Congress loves giving constituents things until they have to start paying for it.

Let's face you on the right did not object to the wars, to the tax cuts to helping the elederly now you object to having to pay or specifically for the wealthiest to pay.

It should be note that 99% of Americans will still have their Bush tax cuts.

"Sorry Andy, but SS was never meant to be a retirement plan. It was meant to be a stop gap from falling into dire poverty, and it does just that."

Very true and it should be noted that private sector has failed to keep their promise of pensions to workers in lieu of pay increases and 401ks which are connected to the ups and downs of the markets have less value.

There are employers who judge SSI as retirement plans for their employees.

Some of us believe a person shouldn't go broke just because they get sick.

Well if you have no insurance and no money just what do you propose to do? The right feels go ahead and get sick just don't expect me to pay for it. Funny about the right, when it affects them they change their tune.

My son, who lives in Ct. just received notice (I posted this info. on another post) from a rather large company he works for that his health premiums will double starting next month. He will be paying $110.00 every two weeks and his deductible just went from $1000.00 to $5000.00 starting 2014. Who knows what his health premiums will be in 2014, if they are doubling effective this month. He also is a Pastor and the small church pays him an extra (small albeit) wage. So, thank you Obama...you are changing this country one dollar at a time from every working person of every walk of life. You reward dependence on the state and punish the worker...quite the liar you are...

Gav,

I too am surprised at your comment in concurring with Hayes...

SSI is all my parents have...gee...my Mom didn't retire until she was 70 and her husband until a year later. They paid into that for years. Actually, Hayes comment (not surprisingly) is cold.

You do know rmiller health insurance co pays have been going up for years, long before Obama. When I first started working I paid nothing, the comany paid it all and that was a mom and pop company. Maybe we should look at the private insurance companies as the problem.

Blaming Obama for the rising cost of health care is like blaming the rooster for the dawn.

The bulk of the ACA and hasn't even started yet.

I agree with Gavin and Chayes, Social Security was never meant to be your sole income at retirement. Unfortunately, for many, it is just that. I see it from the side of someone close to me who lives on $900/month social security and who pays that same monthly insurance premium. They just didn't have the money to put back and didn't work anywhere who paid a pension. I feel for the people who try to live like that, but SS was never meant to be their only income.

Jerry and Rick,

"You do know rmiller health insurance co pays have been going up for years, long before Obama."

Uhhhhhh don't hedge this one,,,guys...he is bent on destroying this country and n matter what arguments you put forth, the economists speak differently. Obviously neither of you read my post and the figures. BTW, the health insurance that is going up? My son's portion is only 25% of the entire pkg, for one family...do the numbers. Yes, heath insurance is going up and ha been for years, and yes the carriers are culpable....but that's business. Whereas Obama has a motive and while insurance rates have climbed...those not wishing to participate weren't fined. Quit trying to mask the enormity of this dangerous bill to our country.

So if big business raises the prices that is just business and therfore it is OK? My healthcare has been going up steadly since 1981. Before that my employer paid it all. It is delusional to say Obama is the culprit now. Just because many on the right feel he is the anti Christ don't blame him for everything. Rmiller, you and your followers of FOX and PTL are the ones who are bent on destroying this country.
