School board has limited options

January 16, 2013

JERSEY SHORE — Other than moving forward with a plan proposed Monday night to save its educational programs from the chopping block, the Jersey Shore Area School Board said it has no other options....

Thanks JRM for your information, but it would be better to start your research as far back as 2005. Some interesting data found so far: petition filed in Lycoming County court No. 05-00,778 to increase real estate tax levy an additional 16% above the 10% allowed by law; Superintendents contract waived the residency requirement (BM-L.Brooks, T. Fanning, B. Hockenberry, N. Petrosky, C. Shurer, D. Smith, A. Uhl, M. Welsh, and W. Miller (Nov. 21, 2005)done prior to reorganizational meeting of new board members D. Ireland, S. Helm, H. Brungard, and C. Allen); the regular and work sessions lasted anywhere from 15-60 minutes and no questions from the floor were answered; would appear the board was split on 5-4 voting; Nepatism policy got removed as recommended from the Superintendant; expensive lawsuits settled; omission of policy comprehension; financial questions unanswered by the business manager; administrators/teachers family members hired; and will report more later...

jrm....thank you for seeing the BIG picture here...If SOSD had ANY real interest in factual information..they would be referencing the info you suggest. I can only wonder what her real agenda might be...or is this just a shadow of another persons agenda...Beware those followers..do your own fact finding!

I see the board member posted on the SOS website and with some good information as well. I would think that the young lady responsible for posting private information should stop trying to justify herself with excuses for crossing boundaries. Also, I would commend that member for not wanting to take legal action, as she has made concessions to combat people like you who say you cannot get answers. I WONDER WHY? Interesting she noted a constituent called her, not you.

jrm3535, why would any special interest group try to promote the one campus system over getting their one elementary axed? Essentially, this is what I see happened and some not so smart school board members went along with it. I would suspect that the sqeaky wheel got its oil, those who barked loudest got feed or even someone wasn't doing their job? So many questions....

To the administrator of the facebook page SOSD...Try asking your SUPERINTENDENT the questions....It's HIS job to answer questions...NOT the board....get with the real program and you'll be doing a service to your compatriots...think for yourself.

You can look at the old school board meetings online. ***********jsasd.k12.pa.us/Page/6514

Could help answer some questions. The one of August 2008 is a good one to start with. How can anybody say that closing 3 schools is better than 1?

After another look at 'Save our School District' facebook page...I noticed a post made by a board member was deleted....Well...now... isn't that special!

I guess full information is just a concept and not a reality...

The facebook guidelines suggest breach of privacy without consent is cause for termination.

Would someone inbox me with the name of the person who was violated or could the mediator on the Save Our School Website give their explanation as to why they would post private information without getting consent from the board member first?

As I peruse the Website, I see that a parent questions the legality of posting minor children's photos without parental consent. The moderator replies they have acquired legal advise regarding the matter, would the moderator like to share where that legal advice came from?

As to the distribution of propaganda on school property, could someone tell me what lawyer was caught doing that on school property at Monday nights meeting?

It would appear Andy has some valid points!

Went to the suggested facebook page...I was astonished at the misinformation. Since I don't know the administrator of this page...I can only guess as to the rational for posting misleading information...even more [astonishment] for the followers that seem all to willing to allow others to lead them around. These leadership skills are usually assigned to the valley girls!

WOW! People are putting others in harms way over what? A school closure, are you kidding Me! It sounds as though some people are crossing boundaries, with very bad legal advice I would assume. As of the start of working hours this morning, it would appear as though that board has some unattended business to take care of before implementing what was presented on Monday night. I hope that business is dealt with responsibly.

I caution those reading propaganda on the Bethany McClain Save our School website. I have contacted my district school board representative and they were almost 99.9% sure that she has never attended a public board meeting. It is one thing to be informed, but another to spread opinions that are unfounded. They also informed me that one of the board members privacy was violated by this individual, putting the members personal information on that site. People need to make sound decisions whether they are intentional or not. Any movement on that site reflects either positive or negatively on all the parents of the Salladasburg Elementary School.

I am impressed that the SG editors are finally allowing less propaganda in their news coverage and sticking to what the district has to report to those taxpayers who are unable to attend public board meetings. More facts are better than what any 1% of the biased individuals think should yyhappen for every student in the JSASD.

Valley girl, I have no problem talking to my board director and they represent me just fine. I was very saddened when the last plan was declined, because it had been in the works for over 4 years. I was hoping for the plan to be brought back up, discussed, voted on and passed, but there was rumor in the air why that did not happen. Well, the rumor was presented at Mondays meeting, now we deal with it! I guess when all the white noise tuned out common sense....the dominoes fell fast. I will trust the educators on this one, thank you very much!!!!

So the flyers containing propaganda are being used for the purpose of collecting more parents to help fight to keep Nippenose Elementary School open? So the valley parents doing this are well informed and have easily gained numbers from Salladasburg Elementary School parents? Why would the Salladasburg parents give up their school to help fight for Nippenose? Something here doesn't make sense. Can someone tell me if these parents are fighting together to save all the community schools or if a group of people just pulled a fast one on the Salladasburg parents?

WOW! Requesting information is now labeled as "stiring the pot" and we are "trouble makers?!" Really? We have a right to know. And the best place to ask questions to the board is AT school board meetings. This bothers you?!? The school board representatives are not giving the public this information. I do consider this to be part of their responsibilities when they're using OUR tax money and shuffling OUR children around. Like I said...this consolidation may very well be the BEST option for the district. But the manner in which the school board has dispersed information (wait...the lack thereof) is cause for concern and should make them pause before voting. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with wanting more informatin and if you decide you are too busy or just not concerned or would rather stick your head in the sand well shame on you.

And one last thing, I am going to contact my representative to see if they would even consider reverting back to the other plan. The plan that called for slow integration of this new plan. I can only ask and I am!!!! Then the game will really get interesting, if they will think about it.......

Even if our district had future plans to close down the other elementary schools, ours wasn't an option for years. When the pot-stirrers were only thinking about themselves and no one else, what other option did that administration really have? I will have to keep reading my hand-out and asking my representative questions. That is my way of getting information, other than the board meetings. I wish the trouble makers would just stay home and stop interrupting every meeting with their nonsense. I need to hear what is going on because it will affect my children too. And if you are reading this, stop passing out propaganda on school property...it is against the law and you know it.

I would think that the parents of the children in the JSASD have many choices as to where and how their children are educated. Parents need to sit down and discuss their options thoroughly, I agree ozz1996. When I was actively taking part in my childs education the other night, by listening to what seemed to be all the principals, assistant principals, business manager, superintendent, assistant superintendent, every administrator in the district give their reasons for a district wide change...I listened, because they are the educators, not I. I have also taken note to who is continually using the floor to stir-up trouble and I think you are right andy, nuff and company use defense attorney tactics to repeat themselves continually. I never saw them at a board meeting until their school was getting axed. My neighbors and I were discussing how their pot-stirring has led to our childrens school getting it too. Most of the parents at my school are connecting the dots

Everyone has limited options it seems these days, but are we limited to just one?

There was a nice article a while back about the mess that is the JSSD transportaion dept. I wonder if they have all the logistics figured out or if kids will be sitting on a bus for 2 hours one way.

I'm not very high on the idea of shutting down all these schools, then having them sit empty, still needing up keep, taxes paid, heat, water, etc. Where I work our company spent over 500K on a vacant warehouse last year in those costs.

Things & opinions may be different if the school district had all their ducks in a row before making this call. I'm sure the pond is filled with wandering ducks, some with their heads below the water...

We are strongly considering home schooling for our children. Pros & Cons to all and this is no different.

Oh and another fact NUFFFF....the publics input is funneled through your representative....you have no need to review anything NUFFF...unless you have no faith in your representative. Create all the fuss you want and call channel 16 TV...you still need to use your rep.
