The author makes a good point. But, rather than just buying American, make it a mix. Some American, some foreign. The world is too interconnected to not buy somethings from other countries.
I once considered starting a business that only sold products made in the USA, by Americans, for Americans. After doing a little research on the prospect, I came to realize I wouldn't need much floor space, there aren't many products still being made exclusively from here any more. Everything from ******s to caskets, cars to ships and airplanes are either being completely manufactured overseas or partially constructed overseas and then brought in and finally assembled here so as to gain the Made In USA label. I decided to open up a lemonaid stand using lemons I stole out my older sisters lemon tree! She was my best customer until the Board of Health shut me down!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....used wiper-blades?
No, I think I'll stick with the new ones that American-companies have; made overseas.

...And, who knew that BETTER, than the boys at BU$HCO?
"I would rather pay $5 more for wiper blades made in the USA."
That just isn't reality. If you would actually pay $5 more for wiper blades, you and 3 other people would buy them.
Considering increased freight fees due to higher petroleum costs, it doesn't really cost that much more to make things in the US. But it does cost at least a little more, and market prices for goods are still what market prices are, so that adds up to reduced profits, and we can't have that, now can we.
The Chinese have also become VERY adept at manufacturing, and super quick factory turnarounds, since the outsourcing started in the 80's. They also have at hand access to a LOT of raw materials from across Asia, that gives them a leg up.
CHayes, I agree with you as far has you went. There are reasons it costs more to manufacture things in this country, and taxes are at the head of the line. The countries that are taking our manufacturing business do not punish businesses for being there by taxing them out of competitivness. All other problems come in a distant second to that one. We need to understand in this country that manufacturing will never come back until we deal with the tax problem.
Manufacturing will be and is coming back. The only difference is that it is much more automated and a lot less labor intensive, aka it will come back but the manufacturing jobs everyone expects won't come with it.
Francine
I agree completely!
