My wife and joke all the time "if we won $300 Million we would..."

We don't play the lottery. Ever.

But I do agree that the benefits to the elderly are positive. I don't think it benefits the majority of the people who play it, for the addictive/poor reasons mentioned. But at the same time, I guess you could argue every advantage has its disadvantage.

TX, you're right on the money. (no pun intended). The poorer folks will play and play and try to win the big bucks, but mostly only get poorer.

I haven't followed this issue real closely, but I believe the private company has guaranteed a certain percentage return and not a fixed amount, leaving the risk to taxpayers minimal.

We are not big gamblers and very rarely play the lottery other than an occasional Powerball ticket or a few $2 scratchers, but imho the proceeds it provides for the elderly are a positive.

Tex, I see the positive side of the lottery on a personal level. My Mom benefits from programs funded by the lottery, like prescription drug help. I know a lot of other seniors who also benefit. And I see what my Mother in law has to pay for her prescription because she has a much higher income and assets. So I don't have a problem throwing in a couple of bucks per week. But then I have no illusion of hitting the Powerball. I play the same amount each week no matter the jackpot.

I do agree with you that, for some, it can be a problem. I have seen some folks throw down quite a bit each week that didn't appear to me to be able to afford it.

I am against the lottery all together so I am probably not much help on your discussion.

It just makes the poor poorer and reinforces an addiction that some have.

These are significant consequences but now by going private, is this going to cost all taxpayers more if sales diminish or the company takes a larger cut?

This forum, both conservative and liberal, many times despises government, politicians, and businesses getting in bed together. Well here is the perfect example of a long-term relationship; not a simple contract to buy some backhoes, provide cleaning services, or build SUV's for the government use.

My solution, ditch the lottery.

The whole country is amazed at PA's archaic sale of alcoholic beverage laws.

Remember the brew-ha-ha when Wegman's wanted to start selling beer? There were letters from people who actually thought that there would be drunkards walking all around the store.

As far as the State Stores go..... the whole alcohol sales system has to be brought into the 21st century. Relatives from out of state are in amazement at what we have to go through to purchase beer and the like.
