For more information on how the City is all wrong here, please read "The mayor, an arena, a vision" in today's Letter's to the Editor. In it you will read where Campana is to be credited with Kohls and Little League baseball. You will also read that because of this: "Williamsport is truly becoming a must destination for many to live, work and visit". Seriously! Who knew?
It was the cities stupidity for bringing in an "outdoor" hockey team to Williamsport anyway. Hockey certainly has a limited following in this area and no one wanted to sit on cold metal breachers when it was 20 degrees outside. It was the the cities short sightedness that got them in this mess, now eat the residual expenses and learn from your mistakes.
No one Francine because it couldn't be further from the truth, outside of perhaps Wegmans who benefits from the multitude of buses of foreigners who come from who knows where..
As for 'may sue'..seriously you might? You actually have to "consider it"? Give me a break...
"Wegmans who benefits from the multitude of buses of foreigners who come from who knows where.."
China, Japan, Italy, Germany, Korea and the list goes on. It is a real treat to sit in the cafe and watch all the cultures of the world. I was there when 13 buses came in. Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with the article but I just had to.
It is interesting to see all the different cultures in our city as tourists..I'm a little confused as to why WILLIAMSPORT is on their tour guide list..lol.
Finally, some actual entertainment from this fiasco. Too bad it's of the "I told you so." variety. What a laugh fest! Gabe-oh The Clown and his disappearing money act. Wmspt could not look more ridiculous...we own this clown and his antics.
It is the half way point between Niagara Falls and Washington DC. That is what I was told, and when I talk to the guests they say they came from Niagara Falls and are on the way to DC.
Lawsuit would take forever, what it would cost the city to fight this would not be worth it. They probably have been sued before the way things sound. Cut your losses and elect a new Mayor at election time.
Multiple times on various threads relating to this mess individuals have mentioned that this team did something similar in NJ, why is it citizens are able to find this information, but city officials act as if they were unaware. Enough of the "visions" and "wish lists" already!
I'm a lifelong hockey fan. I love the sport. I never went to an Outlaws' game and actually refused to. First, the organization was a joke when it was in NJ and continues to be. Second, the league is a joke. If you were to compare it to the minor-league structure of baseball, it's not even single A. Third, outside? Really? A dumb idea made insanely stupid. Mr. Mayor, you made a very stupid gamble and now you're seeing the predictable result. Eat the $36K and move on. You'll never see it and you'll only spend more trying to. If you want a better city, you're going to need better leadership.
I bet if we did a poll we would find out that most people who talk on here negatively about the hockey team never went to a game. The sad thing is I went to 14 games including the All-Star game and was entertained every time. I agree outside rink was a stretch but for people to say they are a “lifelong hockey fan” and not go to a single game is sad. The first game was 70 degrees what was your excuse. But here is the thing. There was an average of 300-400 people at all the games I went to, so to say there isn’t support in the area is just being uneducated and stupid. There were guys from Selinsgrove that came to see the games. Players parents from Canada to the All-star game. Maybe wrong league and no arena, but with an arena it will bring people, jobs and tax revenue. Be negative all you want. But you are the people sitting at home watching tv wondering why there isn’t anything to do in this city.
I agree that there are plenty of hockey fans in the area.
We have been to plenty of Hershey Bears games and Flyers, but not many Flyers games since it makes for a very long day or an overnight stay. We also never went to an Outlaws game. To begin with, the team name is off-putting, had little to no interest in that league, and didn't care to sit on bleacher seats outdoors, but that doesn't mean everybody is sitting home watching tv or wondering why there is nothing to do.
@Smid1972 First, I am a lifelong fan. I skated on the same practice rink as the Broad Street Bullies in Radnor. I was all of 7 years old, but I did. You tell me about 70 degrees and ask what was the excuse? I was already clear: the league and the team were a joke. It wasn't even hockey. It was plumbers on ice. Nothing wrong with plumbers, but I'm not paying admission to see them skate on an outdoor rink for no particular purpose.
As far as Selisgrove??? Wow, that's far. Get out some.
I'm not sitting watching TV, but I'm not going out to support a team that did the SAME EXACT THING in Jersey. This was predictable, and the product simply wasn't good.
@Smid1972 How do I know the hockey stunk when I didn't go to a game? Because I *am* a lifelong hockey fan and know how hockey leagues are structured, where good players go, and where they don't. I follow the Q and the WHL, etc. I know this crap league wasn't even the Eastern League--which is barely hockey. There's actually things to do in Williamsport, but *actual* hockey would have been fun. This wasn't it. It was a joke league with a joke team ripping off its second city in a row. The other teams in the league are just as bad. They're all migratory teams that don't stay anywhere. It's just a horrible product.

Maybe we could utilize all this time, money and effort to revitalize our city pools and swim team! Let's focus on our children.
