If the British run it , there will not be any more one dollar tickets, maybe start at ten, the British devalue the U.S. currency so low it is pathetic.

If an English company runs it, just think about how much it's going to cost the citizens of Pennsylvania.

This is a terrible idea that appears to be getting forced upon us.

Seeing-as-how you've (obviously) already done the research....how much?

One would think that bids and proposals were examined for the best company to operate the lottery, if that’s not the case, those responsible should be removed and replaced.

Sham, I haven't done any research on it at all actually. I have no idea however, the Hockey Team is a prime example of "when a politician says it won't cost the citizens a penny..they are probably saying that because it's going to cost you a whole lot of quarters instead".

"Is there no firm in Pennsylvania that can manage the Pennsylvania lottery?"

Probably not. With the highest corporate tax rate in the country, we're lucky to have any business here.

I thought the lottery was fine the way it was. Not sure what is going on unless Mr. Corporate wants to bust the unions.

Rick, The lottery was so poorly run (because it was government run) that most of the money taken in was used up in running the lottery. The state will actually get more from the lottery having it run by a private company. The company that gave them the best deal just happens to be a foreign company. It's a good deal from that standpoint. What we don't know is whether any company in PA bid on the job.

BTW My personal feeling is that the state has no business in the gambling business at all. The state lottery should be abolished. That would take care of the problem of a foreign company running it.

Remember when the Governor promised is we allowed casinos in PA that the money would go towards lowering property taxes - HAVE ANY OF US SEEN THAT? Now the Governor says if he sells the liquor stores that money will go to the schools - WHO IS GOING TO BELIEVE THAT ONE?

As I recall, and I may be wrong, Gov Rendell was the one who started promising property tax relief with casino profits.

I agree that the government has no business running a lottery but it is going to have one and wants to outsource it, they should look for a PA based company to do so. The Governor is screwing the pooch on this one!

pinecr and steelerfan, my understanding is that the Homestead Act real estate tax reduction or rebate is funded by the Pa State Lottery and casinos so there is your promised lowering of real estate tax. I've been receiving it for years and it cuts my real estate taxes roughly in half. It works for me as I've yet to buy a single lottery ticket in my entire life. A smart man once said that lotteries and gambling in general are a "voluntary tax on the stupid".

That's the same sales-pitch, used, to encourage privately-owned/run prisons...where oversight is (ALSO) assumed "unnecessary".

I'm pretty-certain that concept was "sold" to everyone, by the same paranoids who've been trotting-out "It's hip to be ignorant White-Trash!", more-recently.

Rick and Enigma, I don't have a problem with the PA lottery being run. I've seen first hand the good it does in helping our poor senior citizens. No, I don't think a foreign company should be running it. Yes, I agree that there are problem gamblers and those who think one more ticket will be the answer to all of their financial woes. But most of us, people like me, don't mind having a little fun throwing a couple of bucks in the pot when it benefits our seniors.
