Recession or depressionFebruary 12, 2013Our federal government is telling us that we are in a short term recession. Well, if you believe that I have some beach front property up in Alaska I’ll sell to you.... Showing 25 of 35 comments Show More Comments

Agree in part. Everyone talks unemployment, but underemployment is far more important. Many have less spendable income than 4 years ago. A primary reason is medical costs, even among the employed. The healthcare system as we know it is beyond repair, yet both the right and the left want to throw band aids at the problem. Few workers can afford maxing their out of pocket costs when necessary. No fed or state politician gets it because they are in a fantasy world where pensions and full medical benefits still exist.

...And, with "fans" like Mitch McConnell, how could he NOT succeed...right??
When it comes to screwing-up, Lil' Dumbya Bush was the "gold standard". To suggest ANYONE would "only" need two years...to clean-up, after his EIGHT years...is absurd.

Revelation 20:7-9 "When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them."
I can't see an explicit reference to yellow people; but there are some that think it MIGHT be Chinese or Mongolian or Russian....no mention of the US." - ToTEXASfromPA

Let's ignore the "yellow people" and Alaska references for a moment.
The point about the state of our economy is somewhat valid, although ackward.
Are people depressed? Some are who have lost their jobs, lost their homes and have little hope for the future are depressed.
Some who went from several times on 99 weeks of unemployment to SS disability might not be depressed and enjoying their lifestyle on the backs of others.
The FACT is that the number of people receiving unemployment compensation and disability compensation are at all-time highs.
The FACT is that we have fewer jobs available in the economy than we did prior to 2009.
The FACT is that President Obama had two years of full control to enact his policies for fixing the economy before the GOP took control in 2011.

Rick, it was your guy Obama that said he campaigned in all 57 states with Alaska and Hawaii left to go.
That was a little pun intended on Steelfan's part.

I think it's important to understand the definitions of the words we use.
"Feels like a recession" and "recession" are two different things. I believe it was George H. Bush who learned that lesson the hard way. But I digress...

Not that I take it personally or anything, but I'm wondering why someone disagreed with my earlier question. If they feel that we are more depressed, just say so!

I remember seeing Russia when I traveled all 57 states.

"A recession is two quarters of negative GDP growth. We have not been in a recession since 2009."
Why Jerry, if I didn't know better, I'd think you were saying that certain people don't even know what a recession is.

Actually Josh I was going to say something about beach front properties in Alaska. It is expensive and there are even places where you can see Russia from your house, those are really expensive.

How is no one pointing out that Alaska ACTUALLY has beach front property.
I suppose it does properly set the tone for the rest of his letter.

Getting to another of the letter writer's assertions, ARE people in this country depressed? Or any more depressed than they've ever been?
I know it could seem that way to a person who only reads the letters and comments on this site, but overall I think people are still out there living their lives, finding joy when and where they can, and making do the best they know how.

JosephOtto,"The recession ended in June 2009."
Another government numbers game. The GDP includes government spending so if you increase government spending enough you can make it look like the recession is over. That's exactly what happened. The private sector is technically no longer in recession, but to say it has recovered is not accurate. There are fewer people working in this country than at the depths of the recession. The economy is bad and everything the government is doing now is making it worse.

"The Bible is right when it tells us that the yellow race will rule the world."
For once I have to agree with Shaman. This is not in any version of the Bible I've ever seen. Why did you have to mess up a relatively good letter by putting this nonsense at the end?
