Wrong focus

February 13, 2013

Before we can talk about the problems of violence today, we must first learn what we are talking about. First, everything is an assault weapon....

This letter contains entirely too much common sense, therefore it will be ripped apart.Great letter.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with this letter it's well thought out and well written. Good Job Mr. Breon (is it me or is this a reprint? or perhaps something extremely similar was printed not long ago)

At least he had an original thought, unlike any of your entries.

This is a well argued letter that might make us (some of us) think differently about the topic. Sad that Liberals had this gun control playbook all oiled up and ready just waiting for the next mass killing. If not for that preconceived outrage from the left, we might actually be able to talk about this issue.

The assault weapons ban was not written to written to stop the sales of hammers or bolt action rifles. So yes, we do need to understand our terminology and not go off on these ridiculous exaggerations.

Having said that, I AM AGAINST THE ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN AS IT is CURRENTLY WRITTEN." A weapon does not become more lethal just because you change the appearance of it.

But I nevertheless have to disagree with you all so far. The letter is idiotic.

"By the way there is a difference between a magazine and a clip look it up."

To me this sentence and everything following is the true substance of the letter. Everything above this sentence is not much more than sarcasm.

If we cannot agree on the definitions of words, we cannot agree on anything.

Good post Mr. Otto.

Yours too Reeder.

Here's a spin on the video game debate. Whacked out gamers are satisfying their sick need to kill by killing virtual people. Therefore the question can be asked, "How many real people have been saved by violent video games?"

This letter was just short of brilliant. Of course, if you don't have the level of intelligence necessary to pick up on the nuance in it, you might think it was idiotic.

Chuck, let me save you the trouble of responding; I'll do it for you.

Enigma, I know you are, but what am I.

"Is it how we look at life and its value or how we treat mental illness?" The pronoun "we" would include different groups of people depending on what point in our country's history is focus on. For example, Native Americans could hardly be included in "we" for much of our history since they had few if any of the rights that other groups had.

David, So you couldn't argue with the content of the letter, so you decided to pick on a pronoun? I guess that's easier than admitting that he has a point and that you might just have to seriously reconsider your stand. For all your pretended intellect, you are incapable of comprehending any opinion that disagrees with yours.

Wrong focus is a very appropriate title....I will say it again....this area is not a representation of the average American town. Most here use their guns for hunting frequently. Many children have handled guns since they were 12. Elsewhere that is not the case, and why more people are harmed in gun accidents than invading homes. I actually agree with the right in gun ownership, but I cannot understand why they do not push for better gun education and support screening. Criminals will get guns, yes, but we can minimize accidents that kill law abiding registered gun owners. Those are lives worth saving, and should be a goal of everyone.

How could we possibly have regulations on airplanes? Why, everythings an airplane, well at least everything I can pick up and throw through the air for 20 feet.

I suppose I don't see how anyone could think that playing counter productive, childish, semantic games is in any way clever.

The one thing that's clear from the letter is that the writer doesn't really understand the whole concept of linguistics. When groups of people get together, the assign names to groups of things. You can lay down on the floor, and scream, and cry, and carry on that you don't like the name that has been assigned to something, but it doesn't change reality.

Waaaaaaaa!!!!!! I don't like the name "pancakes" for the breakfast item. Everything I can run over with a steamroller is a "pancake", and it bothers me to think about peeling the neighbors dog off the street and eating it for breakfast. Waaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!
