The Newtown massacre did not just happen a month ago, it started back in the 50s and 60s and has only gotten worse as our greedy self-serving tax and spend imbecile politicians and presidents create......

I sometimes wonder what the national reaction be after a "Haymarket" type event if it happened in the current social climate.

Wanna see an example of someone that would fail my test to be a legitimate gun owner? Read the letter. An openly, and freely stated hostility to all duly elected officials of the govt, and/or a desire to subvert the United States govt would put you on the list.

What's more moronic than arming your sworn enemies?

"greedy money thirsty self-serving imbecile politicians and presidents"

I thought the President was a politician. While I wish the letter writer was more organized in his thought patters, I generally agree that much of what we see happening now is a consequence of a pattern of government activity. It started much earlier then he says, but did pick up steam in the 60's. The breakdown of the family is the root of many of our society's problems.

CHayes, There have been government who have used your test for gun ownership. They went by many names, but you may recognize them. NAZI, Fascist, Communist, any of that ring a bell? Anyone in those countries who didn't like the 'duly elected officials' lost all rights. Furthermore, if our government used that criteria, we would have to stop giving arms to rebels in other countries. Did you have this view when people were openly advocating the assasination of President Bush? Did you object to having people who had advocated the overthrow of the U.S. government, on the President's staff (Van Jones), or people who actally bombed government buildings (Bill Ayers) supporting the President? I must have missed those rants.

Good question. Why is our President sending weapons to Egypt, which is now run by a radical Islamic group who has sworn to destroy the West?

By the way, I haven't heard anyone who wants the government to arm the citizens, just to allow them to arm themselves. Even if, as you imagine, these people are enemies of the government, our government recognizes the right of self defense for people and countries.

The reason laws are not enforced Mr. Temple is not the bleeding hearts but the lack of funding due to a reluctance of spending money or raising taxes. It is the continued blocking and holding up nominations to the courts.

It is laughable that liberals do not trust their fellow citizens, but use the terms "social contract" and "community" to promote their agenda.

In other words, liberals believe in their own superiority over the masses.....which is a sign of a mental disorder.

Mr. Reeder:

There will never be enough funding for liberals.

You need to admit that you believe the people should turn everything over to you and then you will give us back only what we "need" so you can spend the rest.

The writer brings up the minimum wage back in the 50s and 60s. Fiscal Times examined the minimum wage issue and did a comparative study of minimum wage and what it could buy you in each decade from the 50s to now. They compared the hourly wage of each decade and the cost of a gallon of gas, monthly rent and the price of a movie ticket. The cost was the national average at that time. For a gallon of gas you had to work on average around 20 minutes for that gallon of gas. For a movie ticket you are working on average around 75 minutes for one ticket. Rent went from working 56 hours for rent to over double that today.

While the purchase of some items remained compatible to minimum wage, renting became unattainable.

" Why is our President sending weapons to Egypt"

I agree that I'd love to see that stop.

" which is now run by a radical Islamic group who has sworn to destroy the West?"

The Muslim Brotherhood is hardly a " radical Islamic group who has sworn to destroy the West". They spoke out against the Sept 11th attacks in the strongest possible terms, and have been harshly critcized by the now leader of al Qaeda. That being said, they're still a bunch of theocrats, and I don't much like theocrats.
