Crane commerce

60-120 jobs, with 1 crane? Now how does that arithmetic work? If this 1/2 mile of RR track could double or triple there employee count, I would think it would be profitable for them to just go ahead & do it themselves. No taxpayer funds needed.

Yes the railroad will give NuWeld some type of profit. However, this will benefit more than just NuWeld. Local companies will be able to use the railroad for shipping, which would keep costs down and save them money. It will also greatly reduce the amount of tractor trailer trucks going through our towns and damaging our roads. This project would benefit our town as a whole. Which is why they are asking for grant money. The support of the commissionaire is great and I believe they should receive the grant. I would much rather have my tax money go to a project to better society than to the many other organizations that currently receive funding.

I believe Dr. Matteo was very vocal in his objection to Obama's campaign assertion that private industry depends on government to do provide infrastructure to allow business to succeed. At that time I don't recall him making any exceptions to his comments.

Cody, I agree with your post. There is one fly in the ointment. The resulting lessening of truck traffic will probably mean some drivers have reduced work. Not a reason to not install the new track. Just pointing out that there are always many consequences, positive and negative, to any action taken.

Cody, So then let all those that will save (or profit)from this contribute to the cost. No different than any other kind of plant upgrade an industry may make to their facility. As forthe reduction in truck traffic in town, just how do you see the goods getting from Reach Rd to where they are going in town?

Why should the taxpayer subsidize an industry? It's no different than giving tax dollars to Solyndra or any other company. If the rail line is govt owned and operated, then let them fix it, if it is a commercial enterprise, then let the company pay for it. I pay my way in my company, let them pay theirs. And, I'll bet the owners of the company claim to be conservative. If that is the case, they give conservatism a bad name.
