Abuse of power

February 21, 2013

While reading your February 6th article on the Hughesville American Legion Board member allegedly stealing from the club, I was absolutely sickened....

Chuck and Bobbie, while it is correct that most of the officers in these sorts of clubs and other organizations go unchallenged for many years and while it would be preferable to have a changeover in leadership, the reality is that they remain there because nobody else wants it. In life we get what we tolerate, and these groups tolerate the sitting leadership because there is no one willing to take over the reins.

I agree as well, anyone from any org should be charged. If any of you know please correct me on my next statement, I don't believe the board member was caught stealing money/cash, I believe they caught him on video stealing the gambling tickets. I could be mistaken.

The big problem with these organizations is that the officers of the organization go unchallenged for years. The same people hold the same office for longer than members of legislations. People should be rotated out of those offices in the organization at least every 2 years if not yearly.

Sorry but professionals are arrested for stealing all the time nobud. The problem with small organizations is there is no checks and balances within the system. By the time they relaize something is not right it is too late. Hiring someone from the outside is more costly than what they are protecting.

Charles, my CPA and his staff are not thieves. The oversight of a professional would make this sort of abuse of funds much less likely. Also, the use of computer software, the ending of paper books, the ending of cash payouts and a requirement of a ceiling for payments made without board consent would help. The days if operating out of an old cigar box are over. Theft in the service industry and these sorts of clubs and organizations is too rampant to not treat them as a business.

Unfortunately nobud professionals stel also. These organizations should not have one person handling the finances, nor rely on one person in the organization to hande it all. They make it too easy for this to happen.

All these clubs seem too have this problem with someones fingers in the till. Leigon, V.F.W., Moose in South Side always have a thief in the wood pile!

Unfortunately, this type of thing happens all the time when there are treasurers of organizations. Little Leagues, VFWs, Fire Companies, Scouting groups and more all face this on a regular basis. For many the temptation is just too great. Maybe these groups should start having professional services do their bookwork, or at the very least have them reviewed quarterly or yearly by a professional. It may be cheaper in the long run.

I understand the author's feelings on the matter, but I believe in equal protection under the law.

Theft is theft. It does not matter if you steal from a wonderful organization or from an abusive organization....the crime is the same.
