The Sun-Gazette’s continued attacks on Obamacare — like the recent cartoon calling it “snake oil” — mislead people and keep them from finding out the very real benefits of the Affordable Care Act,......

The problem is that most of it IS snake oil. There are some benefits, like being able to carry my children until age 26 if they aren't offered a health plan of their own at their place of employment, and the preexisting condition clause.

In my opinion, a big part of the skyrocketing health care costs is peoples use of the system without payment to those who provide those services. Medicaid pays considerably less than the service costs and Medicare barely covers cost. Add that to those who don't have either, or insurance, and have no way to pay. The health care industry has to keep afloat somehow, and the way they do it is by raising prices and charging inflated prices to those with insurances that will pay it and to those who pay it out of pocket. Either way, we are paying for it with out-of-pocket expenses or increased insurance premiums and co-pays.

Alison, I hope you become more educated too. Our Gov officials voted for a law they didn't even read. Is that responsible? It is fact the costs will go up, not down. It is fact you will loose privacy and control. Enjoy what you voted for, but spare me the knowledge claim on this one.

mikekerstetter - You are correct. Obamacare is nothing but snake oil. It does nothing to help America except force it deeper into debt. Obamacare was written by the health industry for the health industry, that's why Pelosi said we had to pass it to find out what's in it.

I believe that starting next tax season the portion of your medical care that your employer pays will have to be claimed as 'income' on YOUR tax returns. Just keep that in mind. What's that mean exactly? Higher tax brackets..thanks to money you didn't actually get paid.

Thats just one of the many problems with ObamaCare. The biggest problem with it is requiring people to carry medical insurance at all. Some families just can't afford it. If you're a male without a disease, and you just can't afford family medical, the public assistance doesn't care, they WILL NOT help you. I can tell you right now, where I work, I couldn't afford to pay for medical for my whole family, so luckily they get it elsewhere. Through my employer it would cost us $500/month.. That's insane. There are some cheaper health plans out there, there are also some more expensive. Health Insurance cripples some families due to their already lacking income. Obamacare did not think about this when it was

The author is a useful idiot who does not understand the legislation, but swallowed Obama's speeches about it hook, line and sinker.

The two have nothing in common with each other.

But it is another example of how brainwashed some people have become with anything related to this administration.

This country should have universal health care period. You should be able to go to a doctor or hospital regardless of your income and not pay anything. It is ridiculous what we have now as those without virtually have nothing unless they walk into an emergency room, and we all pay for that in some way. My insurance goes up every year under the system we have now, it is broken, has been for years. The affordable health care act is a start but still involves private insurance. Get rid of those clowns, they are the problem. Gods that determine what you should or shouldn't have for your health.

"This country should have universal health care period. You should be able to go to a doctor or hospital regardless of your income and not pay anything."

And doctor's offices should be run as private businesses, but that doesn't really mean people will "not pay anything". If the govt would act as the single payer for healthcare, people would still have to pay for healthcare, just not at the time of treatment.

It is true that we have a Governor, that just denied access to healthcare to 700,000 low to moderate income Pennsylvanians.

No wait, the right says EVERYBODY has access to healthcare. Sure they do. They also "have access" to Ferraris, Rolls Royces, and Gulfstream private jets, and it's about as likely they'll be able to pay.

I see a lot of people haven't read the ACA. If you had you would know it's not about giving you healthcare, it's about controlling your healthcare and many other aspects of yoru life. Any government run system will be. It's not free! Most people will pay more than they did before. Even those who get subsidies will pay. We will all pay through higher taxes and fewer services. Most of the money collected goes into agencies to control healthcare. Tens of thousands of pages of regulations have already been written in support of Obamacare. How are you ever going to know what they say? You won't until you are denied service or fined. Maybe having the government in control of your life is fine with you, but I prefer freedom.

Glad you finally admitted that you understand conservatives. That sentence I quoted above is exactly the way conservatism works. If you want something, you work and save for it. Period. If you can't afford it, adjust your lifestyle to make it possible. If you are unable to work, there are plenty of programs in place already to help you. Obamacare was not needed.

Where does the 43 billion come from? If those who espouse the intrusion of government into our lives and the expansion of the role of government thought about this question for a minute and how that would be paid for, we may have some legitimate discussions. Then, think about 43 billion times 50 states, plus our protectorates such as Puerto Rico and you all of a sudden have an enormous number that, since we cannot balance our budget, will mostly have to be borrowed from other countries and citizens or taken from other programs. SMDH.

Everyone should read the "Time" coverage on pharmaceutical billing (which includes something as simple as a gauze pad). We can't hang our hats on one article but this is deserving of additional investigation by all of us. We should know what we are charged for every item. I don't mind the fee of a surgeon. I do resent paying 10,000 times the cost to make one aspirin. Do they need profit, yes, but are hyper-inflated prices OK? Prices may go up. More than Obamacare will be the driver. We all should start looking at the total picture. Our prices are currently at an all time high. Obamacare does not kick in until 2014. What is the driver today?
