Pay attention, please

February 21, 2013

It is apparent by the contents of many letters to the editor and comments that discussions would be far more meaningful if those on the left would pay attention to the right instead of what the left......

I'm sorry Mr. Underwood, that's not how the left wingers were trained to do. Attacking their opposition personally and destroying their character is straight out of the Chicago version of "How to win friends and influence people" play book!

Phil, they are only doing what they are told to do. Most have lost the ability to absorb and think about opposing views. They are trained to just disagree.

Phil, give me a little time until Chris Matthews and Rachel Madcow wake up and have had time to read your LTE and provide a response. Then I can do some cut n' paste action. In the meantime, you are a bully or or or or or any other name that makes you feel bad and inferior! :-)

Dear Phil, Hypocrites & Haters: "You talk the good talk and you tell what you know, you think that you have all of the answers, you put on a real good show. You say not to do something but you do it the same, when somebody else does it you call them a name. You are lacking in areas yet you put down someone else; you need to stop focusing on others, and pay attention to yourself! You need to realize who you are, you'll find out sooner than later, you criticize and you judge, "You are a hypocrite and a hater". Why? Who are you? Don't walk around like your crap doesn't stink, before you open your mouth - You need to shut-up and think!"

With the utmost respect, this is the most one-sided LTE I've read to date. If you just swap "left" for "right" and vise versa, this could easily be said the other way around. I'm not supporting or objecting the notion, I'm objecting the notion that it doesn't go both ways.

Let's see.

Liberals were outraged at Bush for the Patriot Act and stayed silent while Obama renewed it.

Liberals were outraged at Bush for warrantless wiretapping and stayed silent while Obama expanded it.

Liberals were outraged at Bush for enemy combatants and stayed silent while Obama murdered US citizens by executive order.

Liberals were outraged at Bush for the congressionally approved war in Iraq and stayed silent while Obama sent troops unilaterally into Libya, Syria and multiple other African nations violating the War Powers Act.

Liberals were outraged at Bush for riling up our enemy with words while they stayed silent as Obama has turned multiple nations over to our enemies.

I must admit I was puzzled by Marino's 'no' vote on the Congressional Pay freeze. I'd like to know his reasoning.

WW, with respect, I think the left has the least tolerance of an opposing opinion or action and are the first ones to attack and marginalize an opponent. The most recent occurrance being Marco Rubio taking a drink of water.

Aw Shucks. I think that we all ,commenters, can do better at adressing issues in LTE while refraining from attacking each other. I do resent those regular commenters who continualy attack the authors , but never write Letters themselves.

Maybe the right should pay attention to what the right is doing. They say, "Jobs. Jobs. Jobs." They do Abortion. Abortion. Abortion.

I can only speak for myself of course but I really like Rubio.

If the GOP ticket in 2016 is Christie/Rubio it has my vote.

"I must admit I was puzzled by Marino's 'no' vote on the Congressional Pay freeze. I'd like to know his reasoning."

Try going to his website and you will see why.

U.S. Representative Tom Marino (R-PA) released the following statement in response to voting against H.R. 273, a bill to eliminate the 2013 statutory pay adjustment for Federal employees:

“As I voted against this bill today, I was reminded of the many law enforcement officers across the country who put their lives on the line to enforce our laws and keep us safe. Hardworking federal prison guards in places like Canaan, Allenwood, and Lewisburg work on cell blocks holding the most violent and savage criminals and earn less than $40,000 a year. Denying a corrections officer a $200 pay increase is not my idea of getting serious about deficit reduction.

“Congress can and must make the tough decisions to reduce the size and scope of government, but this bill targets the people who staff our hospitals, secure our borders, and care for our veterans. This bill was brought up for a vote in the least transparent and straightforward way imaginable – no committee mark-ups or hearings, little opportunity for members to debate the legislation, and no possibility to offer substantive changes to improve its content.

“Bills like H.R. 273 are brought to the House floor purely to make a point, and I will not be an actor in political theater. It’s been made clear that this bill will go nowhere in the Senate, it’s been made clear that the President will not sign it, and I am fed up with these so-called “messaging” bills that do not address the challenges our nation faces.

“We need to be debating serious legislation to replace the sequester and put our country on the right financial course – this bill does not pass that test and was put on t

– this bill does not pass that test and was put on the House floor only for political gamesmanship. Prolonged employee pay freezes and reductions must be done thoughtfully, starting at the top with embers of Congress, the President and Vice President, Cabinet Secretaries, and top-earning managers in the public sector.”

Representative Marino introduced H.R. 237 earlier this year, the Federal Hiring Freeze Act of 2013, which would place a responsible hiring freeze on the federal government until the budget deficit is eliminated. Instead of slashing current pay, this legislation would provide that federal employees are not replaced when they leave their current positions. It also provides common-sense exceptions where hiring would be permitted, including for federal law enforcement purposes.
