" Today's military is much more educated and informed than ever before and will not support a government that is quick to usurp the population's freedoms."

I'm aware of how educated the military is. My nephew returned a couple months ago from serving in Afghanistan, where he was in charge of some guys tasked with finding and identifying bombs planted by people that wanted to change their govt "by other means".

"CHayes - An enemy of the nation? You have NO idea how incorrect you are!"

Yes. This isn't rocket science. If you imply that you want to use violence to overthrow the govt of the US, you make yourself the enemy of America.

Tim McVeigh served in the military also. Doesn't mean he wasn't also a scumbag terrorist traitor.

Just a reminder of what you said:

" I feel our elected officials MUST be kept aware that the voting public (including those in uniform) can install a new government either by election, or by other means, when such is necessary."

Other means? You mean like a truck bomb in front of a Federal building?

Remember Jefferson's words - “I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies,” Jefferson wrote. ” If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around(these banks) will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”

CHayes - An enemy of the nation? You have NO idea how incorrect you are! I served over 20 years in this nation's defense, I hold the right to speak my ideas and ideals just the same as you, sir. I even respect your right to speak yours, as that is the First Amendment. Congress does not LET me own my firearms, they just have not removed that RIGHT from me by due process. That is the 5th Amendment. As for murdering them? Well, sir, take it as you may, but I feel that any reorganization of our government will most likely be by economic and/or political means. Today's military is much more educated and informed than ever before and will not support a government that is quick to usurp the population's freedoms.

I'll leave this at a quote by our 1st President.

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that's good." George Washington First President of the United States

So gun-grabbers go after the real issues not the false choice. If every mass killer, and my bet would be many individual assaults also, was on or was withdrawing from drugs that cause a person to become violent, maybe that's where the control needs to start.

" Misleading, maybe not, but seems nearly all of the anti-gun crowd only see the word "automatic" when they see the term "semi-automatic"."

But I thought I was considered "gun grabber" number 1, and I'm not confused by it. Why, just the other day, Vince accused me of wanting all guns confiscated, which I imagine would even include my own.

You seem.more concerned about it from a marketing standpoint, than an accuracy standpoint.

IOW, we have yet ANOTHER person from the right, saying to Congress, let me buy all the military style weapons I want, because next week, I may decide to murder you with them.

Anyone that openly and freely positions themselves as the enemy of America, at a time of war, nonetheless, should face the most severe consequences. Not only should they lose their firearms, they should lose their freedom.

I take great offense to your thinly veiled threat.

As a 20 year military retiree and a firearms collector and competitive shooter, I will tell you that I own many firearms, including military-style, semi-automatic rifles and pistols for many reasons. a - I collect them, much the same as some people collect cars. b - I shoot them competitively, much the same as people race cars as a hobby. c - I own firearms that are roughly equal to the military because our founding fathers were able to reject a tyrranical, overreaching government because they possessed similar firepower to the British Army. I feel our elected officials MUST be kept aware that the voting public (including those in uniform) can install a new government either by election, or by other means, when such is necessary. It is a founding principle, and if you read the Federalist Papers, one of the reasons for the Second Amendment. An Amendment that has absolutely nothing to do with "sporting arms".

As for the title of the letter, I know of no gun used in surgery. Perhaps it is something found only in the land of Unicorns, cotton candy clouds etc.

"only fire one round per trigger pull. So semi-auto is a misleading term"

Misleading? I don't see anything at all misleading about the tern "semi-automatic." --CH

Uh, that would include revolvers and all other weapons that hold more than one shell. Weapons other than revolvers that are not gas operated (the gas expels the spent cartridge and puts a new one in the firing position) would require the action of a pump, bolt or some other mechanism but would be capable of firing only one round per trigger pull. They would still be able to hold additional ammo. If what the author is advocating is a single shot weapon with no magazine then say so.

A product of lack of knowledge on the subject.

Patti,

I suggest that you go to a local gun store to see the types of firearms so that you understand the differences between a single shot, bolt action, lever action, revolver, semi-automatic, fully automatic, over/under, side by side, muzzle loader - percussion & flintlock, removable clips, etc. in rifles and handguns. You may have to wait until they can restock the shelves.
