I'm not necessarily against this, despite the fact I think this..once again, caters to 'tourists', it may help provide jobs also, so it has it's Pro's and Con's. Although I'm sure any jobs creating businesses in the suggested area would result in, would be minimum wage jobs so the benefit would be very minimal.

The one comment I have is..if I'm understanding this right, you're suggesting extending the Business District into and around Timberland apartments, the 'projects' and frankly..one of the more violent areas of the city in recent times. Not real sure how this is going to work out without doing something about increasing street lighting and patrolling of the areas. Businesses aren't going to want to enter into an area where there seems to be heavy drug-related crime.

However, in addition to that, the article says it's going to 'remove blighted properties'..I'm sort of hoping this includes paying some people to move out of their rundown homes and demolishing them (doesn't help for the housing shortage though). There are a lot of run-down, deteriorating homes/apartments in these areas. Again this is assuming the article and I are talking about the same areas (I'm trying to visualize). This has a lot to do with the fact that these areas near Cherry Street, Little League Blvd, & Memorial Ave, include some of the poorest citizens in the city. (not to the fault of the citizens/there's a lot of income-based housing in these areas)

Pine street between Hepburn and little league should also be included as the embroiderer shop and new medical store opened on that street between photo studio and the large red plaza with the pizza hut in it this street is not commercial,I cant see why they wouldn"t include that street, Half baked proposal to improve Susquehanna health highway to health.

ww, i agree with both of your posts. heres the only difference i want to add. adding better lighting and patrols is not going to help. in order for good people to want to hang out in THAT area, certain people in that area will have to move. the thugs, the criminals the violent people, the drug gangs all of the people that we would need the lighting and patrols for.. because frankly like you are saying, no one would feel safe, at least no one from this area that knows what goes on there will feel safe there. plus business that go there are subject to more robbery at gunpoint because of the kind of people that live there

We need a huge Outlet mall, a Barnes and Noble and a few small shops and restaurants. Change the number of people coming to town, change presence in the area with the inclusion of Outlet security (like Tannersville and the Pocono's). We will draw people and create jobs. Manufacturing may not return but new jobs are better than none.

I live on 7th St. It's a block away from a not so great neighborhood, but I get by in it. The rent is not too high because I have lived her for over 5 years. It's only a one bedroom, but my 3 year old daughter takes the bedroom; I sleep in the living room. I have not been able to move since the gas community has come into town and rent prices have gone sky high. I hope they do not expand onto 7th for my own sake. I will have to move to a more expensive apartment, which may not be as nice or big and lose my "normal" rent price.I am already a single parent, with no help or funding from welfare/food stamps/wick, I cannot afford to move.I would like to see growth of downtown,it's exciting, just not at my expense. Gas companies/workers have ruined our cost of living... there is no benefit to them unless you have leased rights or own renting property or have a store.

We need an IHOP! I'm actually being completely serious.

Biobaby, Spike, JPB, I agree with all three of you completely on all of your points. You're right bio, my purpose for wanting more lighting or even cameras, etc, would be nullified by the people they're "for" simply moving, it'd be a 'visual deterrent' but would it really work? Probably not.

We need an ihop! we need outlet stores! No what we need are real jobs, that pay a living wage. However, an iHop would be nice for all those workers.

I'm kind of new to the area and live outside Williamsport. Have only been here about 4 years. I see so much potential in the city and what has been done so far is all positive imho. The city has good bones so to speak. But one thing that I think really detracts from the area is that chain link fencing along the park area on LL BLVD. I know it's not the best of areas within the city but think some more attractive fencing would make a world of difference, not just to the city in general but also to the residents of the neighborhood.

What Williamsport needs is affordable housing and good paying jobs so people can enjoy going to these stores with their families.

@ Chris as possibly 'nit picky' as some may take your comments about the chain link fence, you're actually right. I've actually always thought that. If they'd spend a little more money to actually make their projects LOOK NICE, perhaps the image of Williamsport would improve. As such, they do everything as cheap as they can and it looks like crap 90% of the time, that's the only way anything can be affordable apparently and even then..it's really not.

Note to Gabe: you will NEVER be credited with re-building Williamsport. Many have tried, tried and failed. A wort will always be a wort, wort. Williamsport needs a train station to shuttle all those folks to our illustrious hotel district, and get them to the colleges and LL games! Give us the opportunity to take advantage of ALL those businesses that Advertise on EVERY television channel you turn to... (Apparently, Williamsport businesses feel they can't compete with Garages in Hazleton, or Restaurants in Wilks Barre, or Hospitals in Scranton. OH! Sorry, that's right; if you want a train in Williamsport you have to go to Lewisburg!

So you're saying we need a "T" or subway of sorts? I could perhaps see your logic but isn't our city a little small for such an investment?

As for the two people who disgareed wth my 'substantial paying jobs' comment..so you're saying minimum wage jobs will do the trick?
