Rep. Mirabito believes there are better uses for Lycoming Hotel Tourism Tax. He feels an urgent need for “transparency” and we may benefit from “regulation”. The problem lies in the question: “Benefits” compared with what? Government is not the only regulator; governance doesn't always require more government. Competitive tourism markets have disciplinary mechanisms, including reputation, revenue loss, and legal liability for illicit behavior by program administrators. Bad actors get punished one way or the other. Consumers are harsh sovereigns.

The State or local government agencies Mr. Mirabito would have be oversight regulators and decide how ‘hotel tax’ is spent are their own special interest. They inevitably want larger budgets and/or broader missions. Objectivity is a problem. Disparate municipalities with fractional tax equity interests accomplish less and administrative costs soar. Pressure will mount for even more taxes. The tourism economy meanwhile will suffer and atrophy

Tourism? Who in their right mine would want to take a vacation here? It use to be nice up in Pine Creek but the Gas Industry destroy that and when they are done the hotels will be empty except for L.L.W.S. time and thats for 10 days and they TRIPLE their RATES!
