Heads up on airport

March 9, 2013

Many of you may not be aware that our local airport, here in Lycoming County, is one of two hundred airports listed as possibly closing April 1st due to the sequester....

It's not that the airport will be closing, it's that the control tower will no longer be manned. As far as day to day operations at the airport are concerned, there will be virtually no changes. People who fly in and out of Montoursville won't be able to tell the difference.

Yeah, a person who read the SG article incorrectly and is now trying to educate us on what it didn't say.

"People who fly in and out of Montoursville won't be able to tell the difference."

Sure. Why would people flying in on planes need a control tower?

Do you people listen to yourselves?

Just curious if either of you have actually ever flown a plane, as opposed to flying on a plane?

At one point I had about 50 hours logged.

So I guess I'm asking Premier, if you've ever been flying a plane into an airport, tried to put your landing gear down, and got no indication that the gear is down and locked? You know what you do then? You call the tower, and ask if your gear's down. Oh wait, there is no tower, because a bunch of Republicans in DC had another tantrum. That's alright, you can either you can either climb out on the wing and hang your head under the plane to see if you're good, chance landing in a plane that some or all the gear may not be down in, or ditch in the river.

CHayes-"because a bunch of Republicans in DC had another tantrum."

Yeah, like the Obama and the Democrats had nothing to do with it. Let me see, whose idea was the sequestration again? That's right. It was Obama's idea.

Can't say I've ever flown a plane or flown on a plane. I've flown in a plane a couple of times though.

Hayes, I've been in at least a half-dozen or so aircraft with unsafe gear indications. There's nothing that anyone in the control tower can do to change the outcome of that particular scenario. It's not the end of the world. The controller can't see the downlocks located in the wheel wells anyway, so anything he sees is pure speculation. You just try to make a smooth landing keeping the weight off the suspect gear as long as possible. Usually it's just an indicator micro-switch out of adjustment. And why would you even consider ditching in the river with a perfectly good airport at your disposal? This hysteria would be amusing if I didn't know that people were serious about it.

Just another case of monkey see, monkey do. First the knuckle draggers hero Bin Laden crashed planes into buildings, now THEY want to crash planes into things.

Seems to be as simple as that.

I can hardly wait to Little league time, when there's tons of air traffic coming in and out every day. Woo hoo! Good times.

Our airport is a little different from JFK or Dulles. There are a few flights here each day. And most are private aircraft whose pilots use small unmanned airports all the time. It's not like there is a takeoff or landing of a jumbo jet every 90 seconds.

Thank your hero and mentor, President Obama, and his administration.

It was them who looked for the most disruptive ways to cut spending from each budget so they could use it as a political tool to point to the GOP and say look what they have done. And then the dolts like you lap it all up and believe his diatribe. It all pathetic showmanship. You and the rest of his minions are equally as pathetic for aiding and abetting what he is doing all for perceived political gain.

The cost of the 20 car motorcade Obama took the other day when he "treated" some senators to dinner would have kept the tower at IPT open for a month.

What traffic? You mean fans in their private planes? The teams fly in and out of other airports, usually Harrisburg or Philadelphia, and then bus to Williamsport. Heck, Keystone Central didn't even fly out of the airport here.

First, for the stupid who predict plane crashes due to a lack of controllers....there are hundreds of uncontrolled airports across the country. Planes take-off and land without incident thousands of times per day.

Second, Williamsport is not losing all controllers. So, it will have part-time controllers in the tower, hence, Little League time will be just fine.

More hysteria from the people who cannot find a dime of waste in our $3.7+ trillion dollar budget.

Does anyone else see the irony in spending 13 or 14 million dollars on a new "glass and timber" airport terminal building while at the same time talking about closing the tower and airport. I don't see anything wrong with the present terminal building. Talk about your pork barrel spending on non-essentials. What is needed is a realistic sense of priorities.

Why would an aiport need a control tower? I quess the writer should have said he got it from a chat room.

Not sure if you noticed Roger, but nobody was talking about closing the tower, or the airport.at IPT, until Republicans in Congress through yet another tantrum., and apparently even refused to look at what the President was offering.

Building a new airport is a seperate issue. If you feel its "pork barrel" spending, then that would mean it originated with one or both of our area Congressmen, both Republicans. You should direct your questions to Tom Marino, and Glenn Thompson.

So then to your mind, because there are single runway landing strips without a control tower that handle zero commercial traffic, we should shut down the tower at JFK?

Hmmm, so the laying off of the atc's at the local airport could be politically motivated since the district representative has an "R" associated with his name?

There is HUGE charter and private plane traffic at Williamsport for the LL World Series every year. And then of course there are also 1 or 2 slow moving blimps generally putting around the area then too.

There's nothing political about a temper tantrum Gavin. The President played out a plan that could have averted this. Republicans in Congress didn't even apparently care to look at, which is unfortunate, because there was a lot there for them to like. At some point, Congressional Republicans are going to need to take responsibility for their unwillingness to compromise.

And incidentally, I think one could make a strong case for not building a new airport. It's not really possible to make a strong case for closing the tower at IPT. That's ridiculous.

I will say that there very well be a good reason to build a new airport. I haven't flown a private plane in over 30 years, and I haven't flown a commercial flight out of Williamsport in over 15 years. I have no idea if a new airport is needed or not.

They have already agreed to tax hikes Chris. What are they not compromising on, more tax hikes?

Yea, there are some things in the Presidents plan they may like, the problem is Harry Reid is not going to let those "likes" come to a vote on his Senate floor and until the President actually starts leading rather than campaigning, we have where we are today.
