March 13, 2013

I don’t understand why our American government insists on spending hundreds of billions of dollars on nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan....

You do realize that applies to charity organizations as well. You gave an argument not to give to charities. You also ruled out programs like the Peace Corps. --Mr. Reeder

I specifically was talking about our tax money being sent there, and you know it. Or, perhaps you don't. Perhaps you just have no reading comprehension and therefore all of this idiocy spewing from your fingertips is the result of a poor education. Nah, you would just rather appear to be dense so you can contribute. The problem is that you are not rebutting what was said, but what you wish had been said. Try again.

Pity the person who is drowning and you are walking by SF. Same for one who is being mugged and beaten too. --Mr. Reeder

What does my helping a drowning person or someone being beaten and mugged have to do with a system that allows our international "aid" to be scooped up by thugs and politicians instead of those that need the help? For goodness sake, man, think just a bit!!!

"Hi steelers.. neither author is a leftist."

Michael Isikoff (Hubris) is pretty liberal, but Ron Suskind used to be a senior writer for the Wall Street Journal.

Chuck,"Phil, which branch of government has control of the military?"

The President has operational control over the military, but the Congress has budgetary and oversight responsibilities.

Chuck,"Our military is not only warriors and defenders but peace keepers also."

Only in that their presence deters other countries from attacking us. Our military should never be used as a peace-keeping force in another country. The purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. That is why they should not be used in law enforcement or peace-keeping. You can include nation building in that also.

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001.

It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security.

Now this much is undisputed. The open questions are: what should we do about it? How, when, and with whom?"

"The very difficult question for all of us, is how does one bring about the disarmament of someone with such a proven track record of a commitment, if not an obsession, with weapons of mass destruction.

I ended up voting for the resolution after carefully reviewing the information and intelligence I had available, talking with people whose opinions I trusted, trying to discount political or other factors that I didn't believe should be in any way a part of this decision, and it is unfortunate that we are at the point of a potential military action to enforce the resolution. That is not my preference, it would be far preferable if we had legitimate cooperation from Saddam Hussein, and a willingness on his part to disarm, and to account for his chemical and biological storehouses."

When we give money for humanitarian efforts, it is often siphoned off by warlords, the govt and thugs and very little if any actually makes it to the poor.

As for the assertion that our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan is illegal or unwise, I believe the original intent was good. However, we hamstring our military. They are designed to conquer and kill, destroy things and win. When our govt tries to fight a PC war, more of our kids die than need be. Perhaps when we go into these places we do it full force, get rid of the problem and then immediately turn over the country to the people and let them figure it our--or we just keep our darn noses out of it.

Not illegally, steelers, but with falsified intelligence. Read hubris by isikof or 1% doctrine by suskind and you'll have a better idea of what happened..

Just because the President is Commander In Chief doesn’t give him the right to use the military any way he chooses; we’re supposed to be a nation of laws and that means everyone, including the President, must follow the laws, otherwise we’re headed toward a dictatorship.
