The article, Fly the Friendly Skies, FAA to close 149 air traffic towers, was interesting. When you think of the FAA at the airport, the first thing that comes to mind is Air Traffic Controllers....

Knapp, did you acutally say that the Republicans refused to deal with the President? You're a little misconstrued. The Obama administration has yet to put a budget forward for how many years? The Republicans have been sending Obama budget recomendations since he took office, only to be put on the back burner while Obama and his cronies weeled and dealed behind closed doors. The sequester is only a very small pitance of this Countrys debt and it is totally up to the current administration to cut where they please.

That's simply not true. It's the cuts that were agreed to if the Republicans in Congress refused to deal with the President.

You're a master of lies and deceitful language! These are not cuts agreed to by anyone other than administration staffers, seeking to make the most visible, senseless and painful cuts imaginable, for the purpose of making political hay from them. You know it, but in typical and traditional fashion will not acknowledge truth.

Hi Erik.. conservatives are complaining about cuts that effect their particular constituents. And gw bush also gave money to Egypt, Jordan and many others. Gw also took plenty of vacations.. see how easy that was?

Spike: 'I think it's unfortunate tours are cancelled, however, average kids need many things before a walk through of the White House.'

Don't stick up for the administration here Spike. For some kids, it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the "People's House". Obama should be ashamed.

eric-ordinary kids don't scrape money together to tour the White House. ordinary kids scrape money together for a bicycle or the movies. Parents or school groups take kids to the White House. Scraping change won't get you there from nearly any place in the U.S.. I think it's unfortunate tours are cancelled, however, average kids need many things before a walk through of the White House.

3 million for the airport terminal is true. it certainly seems 3 million could be better spent given the economic condition of our county. If the gas industry wants a bigger airport and terminal, they should pay for it. Very few people fly in and out of Lycoming County. Those who do are taking a puddle jumper to a larger airport. How will this enhance the financial base for Lycoming County? Will this create a lot of jobs, fix roads, bring business or convenience a few folks that the Governor wants in his pocket?

The so-called 'cuts' are simply on the spending 'increases'. God forbid we slow the growth of government!! Stop the White House tours and save $74,000 or so, that'll help!!! I do agree that we need a new terminal at the airport like we need a hole in the head.

"Oh, these are cuts that were agreed upon by a majority of Democrats and Republicans and signed by President Obama.

These are bipartisan cuts."

That's simply not true. It's the cuts that were agreed to if the Republicans in Congress refused to deal with the President.

They are cuts that were designed to be so damaging, that only an idiot would accept them. THOSE are the cuts that Republicans are accepting.

We have barely begun to feel the damage so far. What happens when the SBA runs out of money for loan guarantees, and new small business creation is stifled? What happens when airport towers close, and take out tertiary businesses?

And the Republican party's biggest concern is White House tours?

A little birdie told me today that our very own Republican Governor was in town today, to drop off a check to the airport authority for over $3 million to build the new airport terminal.

So we don't have enough money to keep the tower open, but it's a great idea to spend over $3 million to build a new terminal? If there's $3 million allocated for the airport, wouldn't it be better to use it to keep the tower open?

But where the cuts are applied falls right on President Obama.

Once again, liberals miss the point.

It is not how many days the Obama's go to exotic locations, it is the fact that they would consume Secret Service manpower while ordinary children who scraped some pennies together for a tour of the White House are denied.

The Obama Administration chose themselves over school kids.

"... — all or part of 69 days — came during his first year as president in 2001, according to Knoller.

Bush’s father, President George H.W. Bush, spent less time "on vacation" during his first year than his son, but spent more days than President Obama. According to travel records provided to FactCheck**** by the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the former president took six trips — spanning all or part of 40 days — to the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1989. The archivist at Bush’s presidential library told us she didn’t have a list of all vacations but did have the Kennebunkport visits.

But at least two recent presidents — by Knoller’s count — took less "vacation" time during their first year than President Obama — Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

According to Knoller, Carter spent just 19 days "on vacation" in 1977."

Still want to go there erik?

Since erik went there, let's go there to:

"President Obama has spent all or part of 26 days "on vacation" during his first year as president, according to CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller...

President Reagan, in 1981, spent all or part of 42 days away from the White House "on vacation" at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif, according to Knoller. President Reagan and his wife, Nancy, also spent three or four days around New Year’s Day each year in Palm Springs, Calif., at the home of philanthropist Walter Annenberg. (In 1993 the late Mr. Annenberg founded the nonpartisan Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, which is FactCheck****’s parent organization.)...

President George W. Bush spent even more time away from the presidential mansion in the nation’s capital than Reagan. Of the 77 total "vacation" trips the former president made to his Texas ranch while in office, nine of them — all or part of 69 days — ca

ANY airport that lands 3 commercial flights a day, and has moderate to heavy private traffic, landing on multiple runways, should have a staffed tower.

That doesn't even take into consideration that IPT is in close proximity to a mountain, and has heavy private traffic durring Little League week, including slow flying blimps.

If the tower is closed at IPT, the airport should be closed. As long as the govt has a stake in it, they are legally liable for anything that happens there.

"There is plenty of money for security around another Obama vacation (1 per month)but none for school kids who want to visit DC."

Am I mistaken, or is erik crying for "freebies"?

As to the vacation question:

"POTUS Tracker, compiled by The Washington Post, shows that from January 2009 to October 31, 2012, Obama spent all or part of 72 vacation days in a variety of places, mostly Hawaii in the winter and Martha's Vineyard in the summer. That's about 10 weeks away in three-and-a-half years, hardly extravagant. Through May 18, according to data from CBS's Knoller, he also visited Camp David 22 times, spending all of part of 54 days there....

George W. Bush spent 32 months at his ranch (490 days) or Camp David (487 days) — an average of four months away every year."

Apparently erik was for Presidential vacations before he was against them.

No private or commercial flyers would be affected by the closing of the control tower. It is has been part-time for many years. If closed, pilots would simply follow procedures for a non-tower airport.

"Don't you think if they cut the hours to keep the tower operational, it would be safer to those using the airport?"

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean. I don't know about the rest of the airport staff, but I know the TSA employees at the airport, already work a schedule based around flights coming and going. They come in a bit before a flight comes or goes, then they leave after the flight is gone, and come back for the next.

Chayes - My point wasn't really having anything to do with Cloud 9. I was pointing out at one oclock in the afternoon, it was very quiet in the airport. But, you may be right about them closing during those times.

As far as safety goes, I am all for it. I want the airport to stay open with an operational tower. Don't you think if they cut the hours to keep the tower operational, it would be safer to those using the airport?
