Hungry

April 9, 2013

Are there any good reasons for hunger in America? Of course not. I remember seeing the newsreels of the breadlines of down and out citizens during the “Great Depression....

How hard is it for illegal aliens residing in this country to receive EBT cards? If any illegals are currently in the program do you think they should be allowed to continue to be paid or be allowed to continue to stay in this country, waiting on an amnesty?

"Just look at what a "food assistance" or EBT can get you. First of all, cash, and then alcohol, cigarettes, strip clubs and gambling; not quite necessary for a well-balanced diet." - Gregory Weigle

Recognizing you (obviously) have a problem, is the first-step towards recovery.

Have you considered subsidizing your routine/addictions with fruits and/or vegetables?

Good letter Mr. Weigle.Unfortunately, you can throw all the food stamps you want at some people and it doesn't mean they'll do the right thing with them and feed thier kids.Maybe we should go back to the old commodity houses like they had in the old days where they gave out surplus food.Ahhhh, the coveted Gov't cheese,LOL.

C'mon...c'mon...you're ASSUMING they're not being productive, during their wait. I'm sure (that "great American") Wayne LaPierre is doing everything he CAN, making every effort to provide them whatever weapons-sales franchises might be available!

" These are people you (personally) KNOW...or, is your "insight" a result of what "they" say???"Shammy - What does it matter, the fraud in all the welfare programs from individual to corporate to international is well known to anyone with one single functioning brain cell. Apparently you have none that are functioning. Welfare, in all its forms, is one of the most wasteful programs in history. The primary beneficiaries are not the poor, the homeless, or the indigent. They are the endless squads of bureaucrats and politicians. These are the fiscal parasites that have a stake in the expansion of their welfare constituency, no matter what the funds are spent for. Fraud enforcement is not a goal in administering welfare, increasing the welfare roles is. More people on the government teat = more government control.

it reminds me of some Indian reservations that I have seen. Tremendous support structure, subsidized school, homes, nessesities and the areas are broken down and population disproportionately plaqued with drugs, poverty, etc. The focus isn't in the right place and the folks dishing out the benefits aren't rewarded to accomplish the right things. Might be that the so called hand outs are rewarding the wrong things. And by giving out so much we are tasking from the middle class more than anyone.

In the past, assistance provided a meager existence....and it was temporary.

People worked hard to find work rather than live with the harshness and shame of assistance.

Today, we have generations living on assistance. Free food, free housing, free healthcare. Why should they work?

We have over 50 million Americans on assistance (not including SS and/or Medicare).

90 million Americans have dropped out of the workforce.

Meanwhile, liberals want to give citizenship to 12-20 million illegal aliens.

"But this administration wants people dependent on the government as to further its "change" agenda."

What people need to grasp is that it is individual initiative that drives our society and growth in economy.

The individual initiative can be in the form of a neighbor helping another by shoveling their sidewalk; or taking meals to a person that is sick; or working to be able to pay for food, clothes, or new car; or inventing a new widget that sells for a million dollars to get recognition and the money; or collectively working with others to get a man on the moon.

When government just gives money to different causes whether it is food stamps, social security, developing green energy, free cellphones, buying military hardware, etc. then the initiative become how to manipulate the government to be able to take more. This increases a dependency on the federal government, that needs our money to operate. Both those that pay taxes and those that receive t

The number comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

90 million people age 16 and over have dropped out of the workforce.....meaning they are no longer looking for work.

Nonsense, Erik.. stop trying to be dramatic. There are only app. 155-160 million in the entire workforce, out of a total population of just over 300m. 90 million is a wild exaggeration.

Too much to work with here. I don't know what some crooked store owners might do, however, you can't bu alcohol, cigarettes or pre-cooked food with the EBT card. You can't pay for any household items including toilet paper and soap. Many low wage workers are entitled to some subsidy because the food costs have increased faster than wages.Should someone not eat or not have enough to eat if they are the "working poor" and working to their skill or capacity level? On one hand everyone writes LTE's complaining about joblessness and the economy and then complain about "food stamps" the next day. We don't want 'Big Gulp's" controlled but do you want soft drink purchased with the EBT? Subsidized housing is not free. Rent is paid based on aggregate income guidelines. Reduced, not free. Medical Assistance requires a monthly payment from most. Prescriptions require a co-pay like ours do. Most drugs cost very little to manufacture.

(cont.) Who is benefitting from the cost of drugs? Yes, we pay more in a co-pay but the pharmaceutical companies are the winner. Pharma companies win when another wonder drug is developed and patented. No generics for years allowing for unfettered costs. perhaps once again, one size doesn't fit all. Some people may need help for a short period. We remove individualism in needs when we apply the same to all in the interest of saving money. Ultimately we spend more. This applies to "welfare", hospital guidelines, businesses that need restructured. There is a big difference between "this" and "these" or "those". indicting entire groups base on the actions of some seems in direct contravention of how we judge people.
