"how many of Jesus' followers weren't willing to be around when he was crucified, but were willing to die for him? Was that just for his memory?"

If you read the last couple of chapters from the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and the first several chapters from the book of Acts in the Bible, you will read how the followers of Christ went from being scared that they themselves would be killed to being bold, un-frightened people that wanted those around them to know that Jesus Christ was alive and was resurrected from the dead. They saw him arrested, crucified, dead, put into the tomb, saw the empty tomb, and then saw the resurrected Jesus. Even Thomas put his fingers on the scars where the nails were hammered through him. Jesus ate fish; it was a bodily resurrection, not just a spiritual resurrection.

Jesus fulfilled the prophesies in the scriptures that talked about him rising from the dead. This is why he is God incarnate, God in the flesh.
