The real Charleston

April 18, 2013

I just read Mr Alan Cohick’s letter concerning his visit to my native city of Charleston, SC. I’m sorry that he had such a costly experience....

You are so right Tedeaux. I have done a great deal of traveling, and as an example, when on the highway, have found the most reasonable restaurants were truck stops!!! Good food (great coffee), reasonable prices, and friendly wait staff. We quit going to the fancy places long ago.

We went to Charleston and had a blast. The history, charm and friendly residents ensure we will be returning. We researched a bit and talked with the locals--something we always do, they know more than the books--and had a great time without spending a fortune. Best fish and chips in my life at the Griffon--oldest pub in Charleston, and looks like it and the staff were great!

I wouldn't worry about poor Alan and his high cost vacation. Anyone who goes on vacation and doesn't know what his hotel will cost or goes out to dinner without having some idea what it will cost, is either wealthy enough that he doesn't have to worry about the cost, or too stupid to have that kind of money. Either way, I have no sympathy for him.

CMReeder:"I bet Mr. Cohick was banned from using 'kayak' for life." So does that mean he was up the Charleston Harbor without a paddle?

Miss Anne, I thoroughly enjoyed your letter! You speak with such passion of your former home that I am placing Charleston on my list of places to visit this summer! As has been said, any place can be expensive for the uninitiated, including right here in Williamsport. Too many times a tourist attraction is over glamorized and in the process, get over priced due to a need to reep as large a return as they can before the truth comes out. Better to give the tourist an affordable experience, safe place to have eat and lay their head down and leave them wanting more!
