Collateral Damage

April 20, 2013

To those who have read my letters before, you know that I am a patriot. If you don’t know what that means, or that term offends you, good. I love my country and will support it with all my mean....

Equating the deliberate targeting of civilians by islamic terrorists to drone strikes is outrageous.

Every war has collateral damage.

Grow up, this is not a Hollywood movie.

All-of-a-sudden, such a sentiment needs to be considered?

...Except (obviously) for all those Chickenhawks who wanted to be the next John Wayne...after they "missed" their first opportunity.

The author makes a point that needs to be dealt with. How one group perceives the actions of another is a factor that must be considered. It may not be the single controlling factor, but it is always a very significant factor that shouldn't be ignored.

Where were you when they US was making bombing runs with airplanes, killing many families? Where were you when the military decided this was the way to go militarily? Where were you when the Bush administration green lighted this type of military action ?

It took a homemade bomb going off at the Boston marathon for you to realize that there is causalities from bombs.

David:

THEY declared war on us. How they view us at this point is irrelevant.

Kill them all until they surrender or change their ways.

Well gee, when you live with and / or harbor people you know are terrorists, you are not an innocent bystander. Families of terrorists, who probably share the same belief in jihad, should expect the fate that they get.

One can only wonder and wait to see the impacts of desensitization on our younger generations around the globe playing computer games with violence, war and mayhem. Where is the connection to the soul of another? Where is the relationship with another human being? Where is love? Where is compassion? The only emotion will be the me-first narcissism that comes with the victory at all costs.

Go out and tell a friend that you love them today. If possible, do some small act of kindness.

those guys are the ones that hide behind women and children. Those guys are the ones that strap bombs to their women and children and send them into crowds. They obviously do not value those "innocent" lives. Whatever happens to their families is on them, not us.

Greg - "Can we even contemplate the number of innocent women and children we have destroyed?" How do you define "innocent" as you used it there?

I can partially agree with what Greg has stated. I also realize that our drone program targeting our enemies among civilian populations has the same effect on the local friendlies as when a foreigner gets caught killing Americans right here in our back yard. I don't agree with either, but I would say that we didn't cast the first stone in this fight and it's game on at this point. I don't know how or when it will end, but it's a lead pipe sinch that we are ALL along for the ride now!

Wow.. not surprising, I guess. Hate to break the news to you but the 9/11 terrorists, as an example, were no more insane or radical than anyone who posts on here. They were simply living out the dictates of their religion. It's worth remembering that the other side has a perspective on things as well..

Terrorists are supreme cowards. They're certainly not above hiding among civilians to sway public opinion worldwide, where human life is respected (unlike their own culture), as an atrocity that allegedly 'innocent women and children' are being killed. As has been said before, they bring it on themselves and get what they deserve.

The War On Terror will end when the perpetrators, their supporters and enablers decide to end it. Collateral damage probably helps to accomplish that. Drone strikes kill bad guys without killing good guys and that’s superior to ground wars.

philunderwood, that thinking is flawed. It is impossible to end the "War on Terror" seeing as how it's an undeclared war with an undeclared enemy and with an unconstitutional authorization to fight it. You think that the drone war is making our troops and us (citizens) safe? Quite the contrary. Drone warfare breeds hostility, breeds contempt for America, and allows people to be killed without a trial. The War on Terror will never be completed, and that is intentional. As long as war continues to be profitable, as long as we continue to listen to the litany of lies being spewed from our politicians, and as long as we continue to be apathetic, expect more American enemies to be fabricated and/or created and our freedoms to be slowly usurped.

"we didn't cast the first stone in this fight and it's game on at this point"

Wow! That is truly cold. Does "game on" mean that we forget our values as a nation break international law and torture the enemy as we did (and maybe still do) under Bush? Does that mean we ascribe to "hate one - hate them all" prejudice and bias? Does that mean there are no "innocents" in this? Does that mean that children trying to be children in a violent world take on the consequences of their parents actions? Does that mean that we become that which me fight and condemn? Do we execute Timothy McVeigh's mother, father, sisters, and brothers?

That kind of logic takes us down a slippery slope to soul-lessness.

Do we ever, for once, take an inventory of who we are as a nation in the eyes of others or do we truly just not give a d amn? Do we just once take a look at the cause and core of the hate against us with objectiveness and a desire to understand?

What are

Islamic radicals have hated us since long before we started using drones to take them out and if we don’t fight them there we’ll fight more of them here. The flawed thinking is that we should adopt some feel good cultural equivalence and not protect ourselves from these religious extremist radicals.
