"Thousands of people who own these rifles do use them for hunting and target shooting."

Many defenders of the 2nd Amendment feel an obligation to justify owning a semi-automatic weapon by mentioning hunting and target practice. Fact is, a law-abiding citizen doesn't need any reason other than he or she wants one.

But if reasons are stated, use "self defense" or "being necessary to the security of a free State" first, in my opinion.

All in all, not a bad letter.

Agreed, Ritty.

We do not have to justify our "need" to liberals. That is just a tactic on their part.

Liberals have demonstrated that they do not prosecute criminals of any type severely enough.

Such failed leaders have no right to ask for more laws they will not enforce against criminals.

Where does this national gun registry story come from? No one is suggesting one. The NRA pushed out that rumor to scare people and it worked.

No one wants to disarm America. These paranoid letters are so indicative of a complete failure by far too many to really research the facts instead of listening with blind faith to the gun lobby and others who makes far too much money selling and arming weapons that have no business being in the hands of law abiding citizens.

Sideliner, You are the one who needs to do some research. All of your favorite politicians are on record saying that they want all guns registered and eventually confiscated. Every one of these new proposals, that thankfully failed, was a step in that direction. Do you really believe that just because there wasn't a law proposed titled, "The Registration and Confiscation Act", that we are safe from infringement? As the old saying goes, "The devil is in the details". These laws are written specifically to allow for these things without coming right out and saying it. Even Toomey's amendment which stated that a registry was not permitted, later had language that left the possibility open for a devious administration. Stop with the Kool-Aid, wake up and have some coffee.

Here's an easy one for you too prove, enigma.. your comment 'all of your favorite politicians' seems to indicate you know who sides favorites are, so take a moment and list them all as well as the dates and what they said. Should be easy enough for you to do.. the fact is, which folks like you and Erik know but refuse to acknowledge, is that not all liberals want to limit the size of your soda just because bloomburg wants to. Same for guns, just like not all conservatives think a rape victim must keep the baby because it's gods will, like Murdoch said. It's just too easy to phrase it like you and Erik do.. easy, not accurate nor productive. Sidenote, ricketts glen yesterday was very cool, we hiked the falls trail in about 5 hours!

I just decided not to register my car for fear they will come and take it away.

Hey did anyone read what Rep. Nate Bell(a republican of course) said; “I wonder how many Boston liberals spent the night cowering in their homes wishing they had an AR-15 with a high-capacity magazine?”

You go get them tiger, what a Jerk.

Speaking of jerks, Rick, now that you have been reminded of what actual terrorists do, are you willing to reconsider your accusation that the "NRA are terrorists"?

Erik, I have NEVER heard from ANYONE anything about confiscation of all weapons from civilians. If you are privy to these conversations, please, as BuffTrev requests, cite speaker and date. We'll be waiting...

The right in their refusal to close background checks loops, reduce the size and fire power of guns and the clips they use are in fact making it easier for criminals or to commit a henious crime. The Second Amendement allows for regulation or to regulate those who oppose any measure on guns are against the second amendment.

Why is it when we were debating voter IDs we were using the same arguments, only the opposite sides. I am beginning to think we just want to argue just to argue.

Buff:

I don't have time for more.

Besides, your side are cowards on the issue and hide behind a cloak of supporting firearms for hunters.

This cowardice was shown to be true based on the Senate votes this week.

Buff:

The constitution does not allow the federal gov't to set the speed limit at 55.

That is why they used the threat of witholding highway funds (collected by the states) if states did not change their speed limit.

Liberals used THREATS and MONEY to impose their unconstitutional will on the people.

Have a nice day.

With 25 comments so far I would like to point out something I think is very telling.

Support for Erik's 6:05 comment, and then sideline's 7:08 rebuttal both presently rate at about 50/50 each of about 25 votes a piece.

I think that is pretty amazing for comments on this forum which generally slant 2/3 (or more) to the conservative.

Considering that just this week we saw the failure of expanded background checks to pass in the Senate, I would hardly call barely 50% support a victory lap.

The times, they are a changin'.
