No worries we can just tax the natural gas companies more and get more funding and become reliant on the extra cash we get until BAM no more gas no more money now we need heftier taxes full circle

Nobud74, I think your information is pretty clear. The food service agencies make their money by asking the districts yearly to raise prices for the consumers of their products. (2 big problems) If the agencies cannot get enough interest from families to apply for free and reduced meals, guess who pays? Also, Unless things have changed, I do believe the State is mandating what the kids can and cannot eat which is costing these agencies more (the "healthier options" diet plan).

How much is being saved in the current and the out years by not having to pay for retirement benefits?

It is hard to make a statement based upon the letter. We would have to know all the costs involved with the previous way of running the food service--salaries, benefits, workers comp, uc payments, matching fica payments, retirement payments and so on, as well as food costs and govt directives that influenced those food costs. Anyone who has gone to the store knows how much our food prices have increased in the past 10 years. Food service companies are not exempt from that increase. I also believe that we have more directives for healthier options--healthier is good--and they come with increased costs. Also, you have to calculate the cost of administering an operation and providing proper documentation to all the agencies involved. Could it cost more? Maybe. But there are many hidden costs that may actually make it more advisable to out source. Maybe someone here has that info.

"if it is a for-profit, then how are they in a quarter million dollar deficit. the for-profit would be bankrupt"

The for profit itself is not losing money. The school by using them is.

It sounds like the WASD negotiated itself into a corner by their own incompetence.

the more I think about the not for profit turning a profit, I've got to wonder what that was all about. That could imply they over charged. Did that money go back to the tax payers? Why not?

USA, it's not pretty plain. The writer offers a clouded explanation and I agree with radioactive, that was my thought.

bid the service out and entertain other food service providers. If what you claim is accurate, its gone on way to long. I doubt you can accurately state it made money when it was a not for profit approach. That is typically cost plus and MOST of the time results in higher costs verses for profit.

It's really pretty plain. Read it again. She is saying Wmspt taxpayers are being taken for a ride by the "for profit" food company serving them (themselves)!
