Aviation unit helicopter

April 30, 2013

Our local politicians, instead of crying the blues about losing our helicopter to the Hazelton police department, should take some of the confiscated drug money that the drug task force takes from......

Sounds practical, but I believe the lions share of the cost of a helicopter goes for maintenance. Even though the Penn College students could probably handle most of the maintence, I'm sure the FAA would insist on some high dollar professional mechanics signing off on the airworthiness of the craft in the end.

Penn College is an FAA-certified Part 145 Repair Station. They already have their own "high dollar professional mechanics" (at least 1 instructor has an IA) on staff for signing off on the airworthiness of the aircraft at the end. btw, professional mechanics aren't all that highly paid, but we can save that discussion for another time.

And Penn College would be willing to maintain this police helicopter for little or no expense to the State? If that's true, who else would they be willing to do this for? I couldn't say what the prevailing wage for aircraft mechanic is here, but from my experience working in the Gulf, PHI and Air Logistics paid rather well, even before they went union. Because when a helicopter breaks in mid air, they usually take on the aerodynamics of a brick, extreme maintenance schedules are usually followed, so it is expensive in time, labor and parts replacement. Can the state police afford that expense at this point? I don't really know.

Part 145 is for general aviation. Not sure is they qualify to work on law enforcement aircraft.

Does anyone here ever read the news? That was a State Police Helicopter. Willimasport never had one and doesn't need one. Besides that the purchase cost is not the total cost. The operating cost of a helicopter would break Williamsport. This is the kind of dumb idea you come up with when you don't understand the issue.

Chuck,"This is what happens when government makes cuts."

That's right Chuck, the government should just continue to spend money they don't have and raise taxes on YOU! You can only raise taxes on other people for so long before it comes to you. This economy is already being crushed by the weight of government spending, but let's just keep on going until Chuck notices. Oh, wait, that will never happen because Chuck has his Socialist blinders on.

When government IS forced to make cuts, which is very rare, they should cut out bureaucracy and paper work instead of, say, air traffic controllers. Logic and government is like mixing oil and water.

I agree Josh. It wouldn't be part of Obama's agenda.

I'm sure Williamsport will get its own helicopter just after Balls Mills gets its submarine.

Kind regards.
