All of these brick streets need to go. The historic value we put on some things just is not worth the cost to taxpayers, the least of which is a street. Rural and Fifth Avenues, the convergence of Beeber and Oliver at Memorial Park all need to go. We are beyond this phase of infrastructure necessity.
Actually, would you rather pay to asphalt the road every 3-7 years or pay to repair the brick streets that would be good for another 30-50 years? Cities need to look at the life cycle cost of roadways instead of looking for the cheapest initial cost. It's not just about historic value, but long term value with all of these things taken into account. Lot's of other cities throughout the Midwest have kept their brick streets and made sure that repairs to the brick roads were done to specification (utility repairs included).
