Taking our guns seriously

May 16, 2013

As a gun owner and enthusiast I find it troubling to hear people say that you can kill just as easily with knives and stones so "why not take away or make illegal knives and stones?" But, if I......

Aren't you missing the point? The attempt at making the specific weapons illegal will not change public safety as we currently know it. Changing why these people commit these crimes would.

The author misses the point.

The anti-firearm crowd always promises a little more safety in exchange for some freedom.

The additional safety never materializes, but the loss of freedom always does.

Firearm deaths are down 49% without all this feel-good legislation.

This is a really confused letter. Reads like some of the commenters on DailyKOS who try to sound intelligent on a topic they seem to know little about.

So far 3 posters are missing the point of an excellent letter. I am sure there will be more by the end of the day

Nice try at sarcasm, Mr. Sahn. But, your pathetic letter lends no more credence to your anti gun arguments than you had before. How does that thrill ya?

This was not written by a gun owner. At least if he is, he shouldn't be. This is the liberal caricature of a gun owner. A half man who needs a gun to complete his man-hood. I agree that a gun is a more effective weapon than a rope, but I don't get some thrill or power trip from holding one. I believe that people should be able to own guns because it is the best tool for self defense. I am wary of those who, like the writer, seem to get off on the power of a gun.

The rate of non-fatal violent gun crime victimization dropped 75% in the past 20 years; The gun homicide rate dropped 49% in the same period, according to numbers Pew researchers obtained from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That's one o' the reasons I've come to the conclusion...ALL wars should be fought with baseball-bats...so everyone gets a good "taste", up-close, of what wars "accomplish".

Another option would be...only COMBAT-VETS would make the ultimate-decision...about whether-or-not we "pull the pin" on one-more-War. They always "manage" to have the insight no Chickenhawk could (possibly) imagine...when it comes to taking EVERYTHING away from another human-being.

Are you PERPETUALLY-confused, or...only when offering an opinion?

Sham,"Are you PERPETUALLY-confused, or...only when offering an opinion?"

No, I am not confused. The person who wrote this letter is either lying or is dangerously mentally ill, or maybe both. Now that I've said it that way, it makes me wonder if Sham wrote it.

Yes, that's the idea. It's easier because it's more lethal AND it's easier because one is able to defend oneself while keep his or her distance. It's a win-win!

"The Department of Justice's latest report on gun violence by the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows a 39% drop in gun murders from 1993 to 2011. Non-fatal gun crimes are down 69%.

In 2011, homicides made up about 2% of all firearm-related crimes. During the same period, gun sales increased. Also, 60% of state inmates charged with gun crimes obtained their guns legally. Only 2% got their guns at a gun show:

60 percent of state prison inmates arrested for a gun-related crime obtained their guns legally: 37 percent from family or friends, 10 percent from a retail or pawn shop and just 2 percent from a gun show or flea market." Is this the report?
