Debating correctly

May 30, 2013

When we post a letter about a subject we believe merits discussion, it likely leads to denunciation rather than discussion....

Bobbie - A moderator, teacher, whomever, poses the topic in a debate. The LTE is the topic. we are merely players in response. None of us adhere to this but might be fun to try.

Anyone coming in to this LTE for the first time......WARNING

You will see a lot of reference to PolitiFact. Please bear in mind this is a leftwing group owned and operated by lamestream media/people!

"Here is a one word LTE......."

Nice to see there were quite a few who had the intelligence to grasp the mistake, and agree with the "one sentence" LTE!

Buff, if this house is on 87 and has creek access think before you buy it. We lived out there during the 2011 flood and for 3 days we had no water and no electricity and parts of 87 were washed away so we couldn't even get into town and our house was no where near the creek. Buying anywhere between Slabtown Bridge and Barbours is a mistake.

"We can’t even have a decent debate about debating."

Tried to tell you. There is even one who admits he doesn't even debate honestly with others. I am not surprised by the comments.

Not only that, Chris, kyls comment was do egregious that he had it stricken from the public record.

Brushy ridge was a cool location but the home was all original, circa 1971.. would have taken a lot of weekends to update. The home tonight survived the flood, neighbors took refuge there. Its the home of the former area schools superintendent.. really nice couple.

"As such, Politifact’s assessment of Kyl’s remarks is false and misleading and fails to focus on the percentage of “services” Planned Parenthood provides to pregnant women — which was the intent of Kyl’s remarks."

Um, boobie. Kyl's spokesman said that his statement "wasn't intended to be a factual statement", the very day after he said it.

So who, or what combination of people are not telling the truth here? My money is on boobie and Kyl.

"'Well over 90% of what planned parenthood does is provide abortions'.. Jon Kyl, republican senator from AZ."

Hey that's not fair Buff. Kyl's people said after the fact, that that "wasn't intended to be a factual statement".

"Just looked at a cool home on rt 87 with Loyalsock creek access."

Make sure it's on a hill. Bad flooding out there. And what ever happened on Brushy Ridge?

'Well over 90% of what planned parenthood does is provide abortions'.. Jon Kyl, republican senator from AZ.. not a false claim, an outright lie.

Just looked at a cool home on rt 87 with Loyalsock creek access.. pretty cool, 385k.

"Politifact rates a higher rate of republican claims as false.. not in the mood to dither, I called it a lie."

Not trying to dither Buff. I just think the word "lie" is not only unnecessarily inflammatory, but also it gets thrown around WAY too much these days.

And I say that in the spirit of Phil's letter we're posting on.

Can you define what you mean by "one word"?

If one goes back and reads the original letter then reads the comments, I’d say many commenters have proved the point of the letter quite graphically. We can’t even have a decent debate about debating.

Here is a one word LTE written to "The Peoria Journal Star," on Feb 08, 13. It was signed by one Camille Sanchez. Her comment: ------------------------------------- "A pen in the hand of this president is far more dangerous than a gun in the hands of 200 million law-abiding citizens." -------------------------------------

So much of what passes for debate on this forum is as Phil describes it. And certainly the televised "debates" for candidates are little better. They typically follow the following format. Candidate A says that Candidate B's car is unsafe because the tires are worn. Candidate B's response is to say that A's car is unsafe because his/her brakes are bad. Not very enlightening. A good example of debating is on WPSU radio 91.5 in Sunday afternoons. It is called "Intelligence Squared".
