If you "conservatives" can honestly justify that sentiment, regarding ReRon Reagan's era of (supporting) Right Wing Dictators & genocide, in Central America, you've got some pretty-strange ideas about Right & Wrong.

NO such thing as a "right-wing dictator". What would a right-wing dictator do? Would such a dictator force the people of his country to vote for the candidates of their choice and risk losing the power of being a dictator? Would he force his people to speak out in opposition to him, and welcome criticism of his policies? No, these are antithetical of a dictator. Therefore, all dictators, ALL DICTATORS, are leftists.

Chickenhawk (also chicken hawk and chicken-hawk) is a political term used in the United States to describe a person who strongly supports war or other military action.

Nowhere has the charge been made that John Wayne SUPPORTED war. He actually supported the men and women of the military.

America's entry into World War II resulted in a deluge of support for the war effort from all sectors of society, and Hollywood was no exception. Wayne was exempted from service due to his age (34 at the time of Pearl Harbor) and family status, classified as 3-A (family deferment). He repeatedly wrote to John Ford, asking to be placed in Ford's military unit, but consistently postponed it until "after he finished one more film", Wayne did not attempt to prevent his reclassification as 1-A (draft eligible), but Republic Studios was emphatically resistant to losing him; Herbert J. Yates, President of Republic, threatened Wayne with a lawsuit if he walked away from his contract and Republic Pictures intervened in the Selective Service process, requesting Wayne's further deferment.

Wayne toured U.S. bases and hospitals in the South Pacific for three months in 1943 and 1944. By many accounts, Wayne's failure to serve in the military was the most painful experience of his life.

My Country, Right or Wrong By Weeden Nichols February 8, 2009

The phrase “My country, right or wrong!” is known to all of us. To some of us, it represents the epitome of patriotism. To others, it may represent the worst of knee-jerk, right-wing, so-called, “patriotism.” I had always, correctly-enough, attributed the phrase to Stephen Decatur, naval hero, captain at age twenty-five, and one of the fathers of the US Navy. The phrase was spoken by Decatur as part of a warrior’s toast:

“Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations, may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong.”

The phrase is also central to a quote from Carl Shurz, Union Army General, later US Senator, and, still later, US Secretary of the Interior:

“My country; and my country is the great American Republic. My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.”

It seems obvious to me that General Shurz was consciously referring to the famous quot

Who ran that war?" - Bobbie2

Once that "pin" is pulled....Wars take-on a Life of their own, Skippy. They aren't like John Wayne movies.

I guess that's why they picked a Chickenhawk, like John Wayne, to SELL "the glories of War".

I never served; "too-high" a Draft-number. I had SEVERAL friends who did, though, and....after returning (nearly to the person)....they'd offer to drive ANYONE, WHO WANTED TO GO, to Canada!!

They call WWII-vets "the greatest generation", yet...the numbers (of them) who'd been directly-involved, in combat, was (maybe) ONE-FOURTH of the numbers who saw combat, in 'Nam!!!

That would be true for any CIC, not just this one Fifi.

MrShaman,

Wow; I am impressed. You are a disciple of G. K. Chesterton that great Christian apologetics writer.

I listened to his book "Orthodoxy" on tape while driving across New Mexico years ago. Maybe I need to see if I can find it again or get a hardback version to read.

Nice!!

"My country, right or wrong" is a thing no patriot would ever think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying "My mother, drunk or sober." - Gilbert K. Chesterton

What an odd quote to use.My mother was not an alcoholic, but I know others that did. They loved thier mother regardless.Do you think every soldier supports every war? Several didn't support Vietnam, but they loved thier country and honored thier commitment to serve, not out of desperation, out of honor and pride. Maybe thats why you don't understand it Mr. Shaman.

*

"I spent 33 years and 4 months in active service as a member of our country's most agile military force--the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from second lieutenant to Major General. And during that period I spent most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism. I suspected I was part of a racket all the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all members of the military profession I never had an original thought until I left the service." - Major General Smedley Darlington Butler, USMC
