June 25, 2013

Last evening I arrived home at about 6:40, checked my mail about 10 minutes later, and the mailbox was empty....

Thanks Citizen for your response. EBay's rating system has cost them sellers. The scrutiny is fine, but the buyer is able to report a negative, the money must be returned (even if the item is perfect) and there is no avenue to challenge. I'm wondering how long craig's list will continue to charge nothing. I assume the sponsors pay a hefty price.

****, again ran out of room without warning-----

Anyway, Craigslist: I have not had good luck at all on Craigslist. And it's not as much fun either. No real challenge or surprises because on Craigslist it's just about the money and it's all local people.

I have bought things on Craigslist though. Heck, maybe even something from you??? LOL

rmiller...........I do ok on ebay---not nearly as well as years ago when there were fewer sellers competing and when the economy was a lot stronger. In the 'old days' as long as you listed a decent item at a reasonable price it was common to get multiple bids. Now a single bid is much more likely. Anything I make on ebay is just 'fun money' and not anything I depend on, so all the rule changes and bigger bite ebay takes is annoying as he!! but it's like anything else---accept it or don't participate. It's fun and I like the challenge---although those ****** emails telling ,me I got paid aren't bad either, lol. And I have sold to people in countries I've had to look on a map to find and to countries I had honestly never even heard of before. To me, that's just cool. Made a few email buddies through it too.

Off topic, clearly....but it's good to hear that someone still sells on ebay who isn't a major manufacturer. I still have my account with them, but I sold for over twelve years. When they started with the Seller grading system, and subsequent ratings, based solely on the buyer's perspective and not both sides if you will...I left. I doubt I'll ever return and craig's list provides quite a return on the time invested in an ad, with no money involved. If you don't mind me asking, how do you make out? It sounds like a win win for you. My concerns are not alone, but shared by many I'm hearing..thanks.

oops, ran out of space with no warning...

With birthday cards--send them a couple days early and mark "to be opened on xx/xx (date). Or make a happy birthday phone call on the exact day and if the card is a day or 2 late it just prolongs the birthday person's feeling of celebration and being remembered.

Personally, I'd be fine with every-other day delivery--Mon, Wed, FRi. I know when my bills are due, if I get a birthday card a day late I'm still going to be able to function normally, any checks I have coming are direct deposited, and all the junk mail just gets shredded anyway. I doubt there is 1 piece of mail in 1,000 that is so time critical that 1 day--or even 2--would make a big difference. And if it is critical, send it overnight. (And buy your own dog bones)

I'm not going to copy & paste all the comments, but 1st--I doubt they carriers are out delivering after dark---which is currently after 9pm. When winter comes they may be, but then when it gets dark at 4 pm they normally were out after that anyway.

I also sell on ebay and consistently get excellent feedback for fast delivery. More often than not items are delivered before expected. In the last 3 weeks I have gotten 3 pkgs from Arizona that arrived on the 3rd day after being mailed. I'm good with that!

Disruption of life because the mail is a few hours later than 'we are used to'? OMG!! What happens when the package on a favorite product changes, or when the SunGazette went from pm paper to am paper or when a tv show changes to a different day or when a favorite bank teller, clerk, barber, etc retires? HOLY COW!! PANDEMONIUM!!! Get real people! So your phone bill comes at 6 pm instead of 2 pm--it's still have plenty of time to pay it and a birthday card? Send it a day

Erik: The military, which conservatives fund very well, also is incredibly inefficient.

Let me just clarify one thing regarding this statement from my point of view. Calling the military inefficient is kind of misleading. As far as the men and women who serve, you won't find a more professional and efficient force. However, as Erik stated, the Department of Defense is a bloated agency that is loaded with waste. This is a common problem across the Federal Government. And please liberals, unless you have worked within the one of these departments or agencies, don't try and refute this. Anyone who has worked at any level of the federal government can not deny the incredible amount of waste. That's one of the reasons I got out of it.

Reeder thinks it is cuts that makes the post office provide lousy service.

The military, which conservatives fund very well, also is incredibly inefficient.

But, this also applies to EVERY gov't agency.

They all offer lousy service, waste money and no amount of funding will improve them.

But, liberals always think throwing more money at a problem will fix it.

An interesting fact about the USPS, is that its one of the only federal agencies created by Constitutional mandate.

Perhaps it would be a good idea for everyone here both conservative and liberal that are unhappy with our new postal situation, to politely contact your US Congressman, and let them know you're unhappy with it. If its effecting your business, that's even more important to tell them.

Tgrammiex4, I hear you and you're right about the length of time it takes to ship things being greater. Also good comment to Chuck about the fiber. Actually, it's the vacuum between his ears that is his biggest problem. :-)

Recently, I missed the delivery of a package I'd been waiting for. I called Reach Road and asked about picking it up. The gentleman I spoke to told me that he's had some carriers out until 10 minutes till 10 PM delivering mail since Harrisburg took over processing. He said it's really made things very difficult. We've noticed that on some days our mail isn't arriving until after 5:30 or 6:00.

The ones I feel sorry for the most are my two labs. They always looked forward to running to the truck to greet the mail lady because she always had a biscuit for them. Now she come too late and we are already inside for the night. LoL But she still leaves them in the mailbox LoL

Mr. Reeder, nobody is blaming the Libs for the Post Office. We're blaming Congress for mandating them to pay employee benefits in advance at a very crucial time when so many are shifting to e mail . They have lost a ton of business and are having to pay out alot to future benefits.Who could expect them to last very long doing that? All they can do is make cuts , as they have done.Even the best of managers couldn't make this work.We are just stating that service has suffered because of it.

Every so often I get mail addressed to one of my neighbors and don't immediately notice it. When I see the wrong addressee, I return the mail to the proper mail box, sometimes hours later.

So it okay to blame libersls for everything. Sorry but people are complaining abnout the poor service they are getting from government even though conservatives have pushed and got cuts in funding for those services. Now they can say 'see government doesn't work'.

The IRS scandal is now itself a scandal. Looks like the Tea party was crying 'wolf'.

CMReeder: "It's the conservatives who are complaining about the service of the USPS. This is what the right wanted now shut up about it and enjoy your labors."

Not sure what that comment meant?? As far as the service goes I have no problems with the workers "The ones who actually do the hard work" but if the people who sit in an air conditioned office can't even pick up the phone and can't even keep their online shipping records correct, that I have a problem with. Like another poster stated some things are originally shipped by fedex/UPS then transferred to the USPS for sorting and delivery. These problems did not exist as much until they closed the Reach Road Facility IMHO...

Reeder: It is not government that screws up everything it is conservatives that do that.

Are you for real? Do you actually believe the nonsense you post? You talk like you are some type of liberal cult. Being an independent my eyes are wide open and I can clearly see the nonsense coming from BOTH sides of the aisle. You are over the top with some of your posts and you may need to go get deprogrammed so that you can have a original thought. Come on Chuck, I know you can think for yourself.

"USPS operates with a very high level percentage of cost of labor (80%)"

That in itself speaks volumes. Can any of you business owners out there survive with labor costs that high? Bill does this figure include the requirement to pre-fund benefits years in advance? Another government agency that has been screwed by congressional oversight and mismanagement. JMO
