If on one road there is a problem with speeding cars, do you close the road to punish community?

Litter bugs now control the fate of recreation at the park. Thanks to the Mayor, a small group now dictates how the community can use a park maintained with tax dollars.

On June 22nd, twenty member of the community protested the Mayors action to remove the basketball hoops. I broadcast that protest live.

Google "2012-06-22 Memorial Park protests" and see for yourself what they had to say.

Fear.Who is going to want to take thier children or themselves where there is a presence of drug dealers and gun toting thugs? It seems like there are shootings daily. On top of that you have foul language coming from adults and kids. Why would you expose your young children to that? Until the police can clean up the town and make it safer for law abiding citizens you will see that kind of activity in the parks.

The community makes money on speeders, the idiots that trash the parks cost the community money. I'm all for parks for our citizens, it is one of the things that is great about our community. But, I don't want to pay to have them cleaned by city workers because the folks that use them have a disregard for standards. Campana is no hero and has made more than his share of missteps, but at least he got the attention of the citizenry who uses those parks.

Jerry,

Thanks for the video. The best part that I liked was the lady that made a comment concerning keeping the park safe and clean..........she said "If the mayor and the police can't do it, we'll help."

If the local citizens would take that same approach to look out for each other and help each other, then that would be a good solution. You can't station police there to watch the entire park 24/7. The citizens need to help; they have to be part of the solution.

The pool was closed because it was going to cost a lot of money to make it ADA compliant. Of course there may be other issues but that was the big one. Older pools should have been grandfathered.

It's been pointed out to me that the year is 2013, not 2012.

I stand corrected.

Great letter. And to Jerry, thanks for your involvement in this issue. I'm sorry I didn't make it last Mon, but got called into work on an emergency that set me back about 3-4 hours.

Just before 8am a man from the city pulled in and put the hoops back up. Today, July 1st, is the date the Mayor had said the hoops would be returned anyway, so don't think the protest had any impact on the Mayor's actions.

I personally policed the park this morning for rubbish, which took all of 20 minutes and filled up half a laundry basket.

There does seem to be quite a bit of litter on the Bowman field side and parking area. I hope the Mayor doesn't decide to close Bowman field in response.

I tweeted pics of the hoops being re-installed and what a weekend's worth of litter looks like. Find me on Twitter to see the pics (easy to do).
