July 7, 2013

Now that I'm in the seventh decade of my life and have recently experienced the loss of several longtime friends, I've had the opportunity to reflect on the subject of bereavement....

Very well written. While I still grieve for my wife, almost 7 years, it is true that I grieve for myself also because I lost my best friend and partner in life.

"I've concluded that our grief is centered more on self than on the deceased." - Robert S. Parker

I've come to a different conclusion.

On a clear night (more-often during the Fall/Winter), look out...into the Universe...and, make an effort to understand how utterly-insignificant we (and, our "losses") are, on the grand-scale of things...especially when you consider the latest news...that there could (easily) be an additional 60B planets, in our Galaxy, that could support Life.

"Death is not extinguishing the light, but putting out the lamp because the dawn has come." What a beautiful quote, thank you Mr.Parker

"I've concluded that our grief is centered more on self than on the deceased. We grieve, yet we would not want our grief taken from us, even if it could be, for our love is wrapped up with our grief. Grief is the price we pay for love."--Robert S. Parker

Even Jesus displayed this human emotion prior to showing his divinity and raising their friend Lazarus from the dead.

"When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked.“Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept."--John 11:33-36

It is important to spend time with others and share their burdens when they have experienced the loss of a loved one.
