As soon as I read the LTE lead-in, "So in a political contest the winner is always a politician. Really! How astute of you Mr. Underwood...." I knew who wrote the letter! Our resident imbecile!!!!

There are many different definitions of a "politician". For example:

A person who is active in politics.

Or

A person who uses public office to advance personal or partisan interest.

Or

A schemer who tries to gain advantage in an organization in sly or underhanded ways.

Personally I feel that definition one describes those elected when they first get in office. Definition two creeps in after being mentored by those in the definition three category; the career politicians.

Who assigns the titles to LTEs? The writers or SG? If its SG, I think they like to stir the pot and keep the arguements going in here.As if there isn't enough of that already....

What a compliment to Phil, to be called "astute". A word that will never be associated with the author of this LTE.

See, the other day we had the stupid letters from the right, today we have the stupid letter from the left. The SG is fair and balanced.

I read the title of this LTE & knew exactly who it was.

You're getting too predictable, chuck.

Again Chuck demonstrates his inability to comprehend when a letter is written with a bit humor.

Look, we have lousy people running for office from BOTH parties.

Some truly wish to serve, but most are seeking a career in politics via party alignment.

That is why we get so few who buck party lines.

politician isn't a dirty word unless they are dishonest politicians. Unfortunately, I've seen too much dishonesty amoung politicians and people looking the other way.

I agree Erik and I won't bring up term limits because I guess many believe we are doing such a great job voting out the career politicians that poison the system. They feel that their State's representatives are not the problem.

The problem is that we have made government and politics the same thing. They are not and shouldn't be. Our founding fathers never intended government to be a career, it was a service that one did for his country. Politicians will not impose term limits on themselves, so we should do it for them. If they can't survive in the private sector we surely don't want them running the government. If we had a 'one and done' policy for legislators, a lot more would get done and done better.

Just like our government, we have ...

Parents who have their child(s) best intrest at heart and raise and teach them to be good citizens. Then ... we have parents who have their own intrest agenda and pop out kids for the money.

"Who assigns the titles to LTEs? The writers or SG?"

Usually the paper uses the title the writer has given it. If the writer doesn't give it a title or the editors don't like it, they will assign a title. In this case, I would guess that this is the title given by the writer.
