Route 220 attitude change needed

July 17, 2013

I would like to say it is not needed to spend $300 million on Route 220 from Williamsport to Jersey Shore. What is needed is to change the irresponsible attitude of the drivers using the corridor....

Jerry, you have a job that I could never do. Thank you for your work because without truckers we would have no economy. But, to suggest that all would be right if people just obeyed the law is naive. Sadly, many do not obey the laws and they must be enforced or the roadways constructed in a manner that makes them safer for all, including those who do not obey the law. The reality is that we are a growing area and we need to upgrade our infrastructure to accommodate increased car and truck traffic.

The morning traffic on 220 coming from the Jersey Shore from what I've seen is made dangerous by a select few drivers who just can't give themselves extra time to arrive a little early to work.

I've never seen a problem with truck traffic, it's always the cars that cause the most problems.

There are simply too many places to either get on or off the highway, or to make U turns! Yesterday afternoon, a car pulled through from Henry's, went across all 4 lanes, and turned directly in front of us. Our car pool driver saw this, and was able to slow down and get into the passing lane in time to avoid a collision. It's like people don't even realize there are other cars on the road!

This happens a lot. I think people get frustrated waiting for a lull in the traffic and they just take off anyway, regardless of what's coming in either direction.

Those of you insisting on a fix for route 220, be careful what you wish for. When I was in New York, people complained about the conditions on the Taconic Parkway. The state responded by spending millions of dollars to make it practically unusable by the local population. It didn't reduce the accidents, but it sure stopped people from complaining, for fear that they'd "fix it" some more.

I agree nobud but with a reluctance to increase taxes, how do we pay for it?

There is nothing more frustrating while driving than "left-laners".

Let's see. Set the cruise for 65. Get in the left lane. Call someone on the cell phone. Take off for Jersey Shore.

The stretch of 220 in question isn’t a limited access 65 MPH highway but many treat it as though it is. Enforcement by modern methods would no doubt pay for itself, at least until some drivers get tired of paying heavy fines.

I know!! Let's put up Traffic Lights!! Lets see- one @ Quenaschocne (?) Rd., one @ Hellers, one @ Pine Run... That should do it. It's not limited access so lets put up lights. Just kidding..............

Wanna slow down traffic??? Rip up all the black top from Rt 287 to the Wmspt City limits leaving ONE lane each way. That's right, NO passing lane, NO right or left turn lane.

It's time to leave well enough alone with that road. Build the other one if you want less traffic.

Unfortunately, that's the only way to turn-onto a Southbound-road, off 220, if you're heading West. I do that, fairly-often...and, want to give ALL (involved) the opportunity to see I'll be slowing-down to make that Left-turn (across the Eastbound-lane); usually the last half-mile (approx.), before I make that turn.

Nice letter..keep that rubber band tight !!!

When I visit Williamsport, I often stay at my sister's home off 220.. even the barriers they put up to prevent "cross over" traffic hasn't stopped them !!.. maybe a few more deaths, severe accidents, and a few more tickets will wake up those drivers..sheesh
