July 21, 2013

On July 15, an article was printed in the paper representing a lie. Ms. Irish Griffin believes that if the Memorial Park Pool isn’t reopened crime will increase....

catmantwo, I don't doubt that is what she meant, that doesn't change the fact, that's not how she said it.

Also, I highly doubt that the city is willing to reopen the pool regardless of donations.

I think what was meant by Ms Griffin in the original article was that kids need more places to keep busy and stay out of trouble. Sounds like agood idea. Now we just have to find a way to gain funding to reopen the pool.

Let's be honest. We can not send anyone back to anywhere in this city, county, or any state. The only thing we can do is thoroughly vet tenants. Make sure our programs have residency requirements, put in security cameras at homes for those who can, (ex:ADT) and start reporting anything that is unusual or causes us concern. I think the neighborhoods that need these measures least will do the most. maybe we should find away to help homeowners in the worst areas to install security cameras on their homes. I think these cameras may prove to be more useful than those the city places.

First of all, thank you all for your comments and opinions. Secondly, I can appreciate your viewpoint on my choice to use the word "lie".

As for the issue with the gangs, I'll be honest, the current problems in Williamsport aren't going to go away until, as stated by a few of you, the people causing the problem are permenantly removed from the city. If they're from Philadelphia, SEND THEM BACK TO PHILADELPHIA!

Someone spray painted "Thug Life" on our neighbor's wood fence, is that a gang here in Williamsport??

My wife told me a few weeks back that she heard someone turning the knob on our front door about 2 am., did not tell me till the next morning, so I did not call police. I told her if she hears something like that to come get me.

I have lived in Williamsport ALL of my adult life 40+ years 11 years in the house we own now, and it is getting worse every day.

Our Kids are grown up and gone now, but we still have our Grandkids come.

I will go to the Neighborhood Watch Meeting at the Bandshell in Brandon Park "not far from our house" next one is Aug 1st correct. Another thing I never knew about.

GysgtUSMC, No not normally unless it is requested by the Block Captain for someone from the Police Dept. to attend a meeting.

I also think the definition of gang has changed. Most are familiar with Crips, Bloods, Latin Kings etc. I think what we have now are "families", of unrelated members, in the drug business, attempting to control areas and pricing of their "goods".

When I read about the Scott Street shooting, it seemed like an episode of "The Shield". A black teen, on the phone, saying he's on the block now, and then walking into a house and shooting someone? Not surprised at all about the Philadelphia connection. The shooter is probably back there now.

We need to break the back of this gang activity and do it soon. Here's an idea - since gangs sell drugs and take in money, and pay no taxes, sic the IRS on them. Charge them all with RICO violations. Anything - but make it difficult or impossible for them to do business here.

Read article shooting Scott St.Article perpetuates the problem. Those quotes from woman about 100% bad neighborhood were false. There are a lot of good concerned people, Honor roll students, hard working people on Scott street, The victim was from Philly. Did the shooters live on Scott Street? I doubt it ,Thanks Sun Gazette for ruining another neighborhood.Landlords have to be able to attract good tenants, How can we do it after this article ?? It is snowballing our community downhill.

Great letter but some of us are too eager to use the word "lie". I feel it's OK to use it here but a little intense for LTEs. On another note, another teen was killed last night but don't expect the Revs to come, unless the shooter can be in any way described as "white". This country is being run by activists who want to get back at "whitey". A sad commentary for the end of a great country.

Wes great letter, the 1st Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm there is a Neighborhood Watch Meeting at the Bandshell in Brandon Park, maybe more information can be obtained there on "how to" form a Watch Program in these neighborhoods.

I'm curious if this letter's author understands the difference between a lie and simply not agree with another's opinion.

I believe the police department needs a representative that works directly with the community in educating them and possibly helping them organize watch groups within their neighborhoods. I think many neighborhoods would like to do this, they just don't know how to go about it. Having a direct representative from the police department to provide education and training could go a long way and it would also give the police a lot more eyes and ears in the community.

Yes, there are too many excuses for bad and criminal behavior.

There are too many who claim that if we just spend a little more money, the problem will go away.

Bull!

There are bad people who need to be removed from society.

Good letter Wwhickok.... it's time for people to step up and take back their neighborhoods. If you read the article regarding the shooting, the neighbor came forward and gave police a very detailed account of what happened. I'm sure she too is scared for herself and her children, but she didn't allow her fear to keep her from cooperating with police.

Great letter Mr. Hickok. Another shooting last night.I think the lack of a community pool was the last thing on the shooter's mind. These are KIDS with guns. When this kid is caught, charge the parents too. Kids are not being taught to value life or property anymore and that IS a parent's job. Start holding the parents accountable in cases like this.
