Message from Antonio

July 28, 2013

You won't recognize me. My name was Antonio West and I was the 13-month old child who was shot at point blank range by two teens who were attempting to rob my mother, who was also shot....

Yes, Antonio, we do not forget.

We will not allow the racist of today, Sharpton, Jackson, Holder and Obama to create more racists via their rhetoric.

We will not allow liberals to frame a lifetime Democrat hispanic as a racist because he dared defend himself against a racist 17 year-old.

We will not allow Obama and media to paint illegal aliens as innocent cherubs looking for work that Americans refuse to do. Instead, we will focus on the gang of illegals who raped a 13 year old girl for nearly 24 hours. We will focus on the illegals who have no respect for our laws, our customs and have no desire to assimilate into our culture.

Racists and lawbreakers may be important constituents of liberals, but when the President, Attorney General and others try to treat them as superior to honest, hard-working, law-abiding citizens, it is time to push back.

We will not forget you, Antonio.

Mr. Hartman, while your attempt to broaden the discussion of the Martin/Zimmerman case to include that of other violence victims seems well intentioned, it would be better to write your own letter in your own words instead of using an email or Facebook meme.

Liberals posting here seem disgusted by using the first person to portray a dead child.

Meanwhile, they praise President Obama for saying he could have been Trayvon Martin.

Liberal hypocrisy on display!!!

I had not seen this, but I think it makes the point very well. That said, the writer should cite the source or otherwise disclose that the words were not his own.

Jerry, I don't have a problem with the SG printing the letter. The LTTE page is supposed to be an open forum in which the citizenry can voice their opinions, aka free speech. I think the burden falls upon the letter writers to ensure the validity of their letter and like Ritty posted, if taken from a chain email or other source to have at least the decency to disclose the source.

Go to CNN, and search for "Baby shot dead in stroller". It's chilling.

Where do you go when a 14 year old and 17 year old shoot and kill a 13 month old child who is strapped in a stroller? What part of their upbringing made them think they were entitled to that woman's money? And that they could decide her child would die because she didn't have any to give them?

And no, it didn't make the news. It rated barely a blip. And no, we didn't hear anything from Sharpton, Jackson, or Farrakan.

Subsequent news articles report that De'Marquise Elkins (the shooter) and Dominique Lang have been charged as adults. The trial date has been set for August 19. Not surprisingly, Lang wants a separate trial, and there are other trials taking place for family members of the shooters who tried to cover for them.

You'll need to mark your calendars and do a Google search on/after that date, because no one in the media will report on it.

I need more facts on this case. I will not jump on either bandwagon without the same. AS to the Zimmerman is Hispanic comment, how so? I have seen multiple comments, over the last year, stating Obama isn't black. Now Zimmerman is Hispanic? Any death at the hands of another is a tragedy, whether or not it is determined a criminal act.

Hey Gavin.

I disagree.

I have expectation that letters to the editor are the words of letter writer.

But, that's just my opinion.

This entire letter is obscene in so many different ways. For one, this story about this baby that was shot in a despicable robbery attempt, was all over the news. I would be stunned if anyone posting here hadn't heard about the story before from one actual news source or another.

The complaint about one story not getting as much coverage as another, is just another shining example of people whining that "little Jimmy got one more jellybean than me".

If the subhuman kid that shot and killed an infant, had been an adult, and claimed the baby attacked him, and he was just defending himself, thus a highly controversial "stand your ground" law applied, it would have been wall to wall. The extensive coverage of the Martin murder was as much (probably more) about the legal issues involved, than the racial issues involved.

When someone (and I use that term loosely) intentionally shoots an infant in a robbery attempt, its certainly horrific, but its also open.and shu

I can understand that expectation Jerry. I am just not sure it is the SG's place to ensure that. I think that burden falls to the letter writer.

Then be prepared to be stunned. I hadn't, but then again I tend to skim over stories like this. I tend to have very little interest in these localized and sensationalized events.

I'm not sure what news source you use, but as I remember it, it would be hard for anyone not living in a cave to have not heard about this horrific crime. The difference here is, a crime was committed, two individuals were arrested and charged. As tragic as it was, justice is being served. The two teens will stand trial and be found guilty or not guilty. Now how you may feel about strapping a 14 year old boy into an electric chair (or however they doit in their state) is up to you, but I think they have to follow some rules about that.

" I can understand that expectation Jerry. I am just not sure it is the SG's place to ensure that."

All due respect Gavin, but it is in fact a newspapers job to fact check assertions they print in their paper and sell to the public, irregardless of who is making the allegation. If they want to print something that's false, or plagiarized it should at minimum carry a disclaimer from the editorial staff.

First, it is an opinion page that allows the readers a forum in which to exercise their free speech. Plain and simple.

Whether or not it is the papers responsibility to add the disclaimer, you and I will just have to agree to disagree. I think that burden falls to the letter writer.

The publisher is only responsible for opinions that attempt to libel an individual or group. This LTE makes no such attempt.

It is common knowledge that opinion and news stories are viewed differently by the reader. Even so, the SG still likely prints or posts a disclaimer that opinions, be they from a syndicated columnist or a local writer, are in fact opinions, and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the publisher.

The writer is solely responsible here.

Well, we know that the SG does not print EVERY letter submitted to them, so there is some subjective process followed determining which letters are published. In this case, the first result of a simple google search resulted in the entire text of the submitted letter. IMHO the SG needs to set its bar a little higher.

But, that said, I concede the burden of disclosure ultimately falls on the letter writer.

And, that being the case, perhaps the necessity that readers check the words of every letter published for originality.

I can see this country has a long way to go. I thought for sure we were over this. I was wrong and saddened. When you get a chance read over these comments and the comments from past letters. The only purpose of this letter is to show the hatred in this area. For that I thank the Sun for showing me just how people think.
