Another resource/opportunity but would cost some money to attend. Go to "www [dot] blackconservativesummit [dot] net"; they are have a several day conference near Chicago to focus on rebuilding the family.

I hope people of all color, gender, and economic status would join in support of these efforts. Prayer is a good way to start and all can participate in this.

sideliner, I think partly it's because they are acknowledging the problem the way it currently exists. They aren't making it about race, but they are acknowledging the reality.

z3ro, very glad the meeting went well, I wish I could have been there. Definitely looking forward to getting to the next meeting and meeting everyone involved.

Nobody wins when the city is besieged by violence and illegal drugs. City residents will become more fearful of each other. Businesses will lose customers. Companies will not bring jobs to Williamsport because there is a perception of high crime rates in the city.

The men of the African-American community should take the lead because black-on-black crime has reached epidemic proportions. The police can't do it alone.

But this is a battle that everyone can join. At stake is our quality of life. I would hope that people of good will can see mutual benefit in forming alliances to confront the twin problems of the drug trade and violence in our community.

As the day went on, the two community groups met and agreed to work together leveraging strengths and reach into the community. Although the groups will remain as separate entities they will have overlapping goals. This is where the two groups will draw on each other for support. More meetings will be scheduled and posted in the paper. Come out, support your community and enjoy change!

It's good to see a group of adult men trying to tackle this problem. The breakdown of the nuclear family has so much to do with the scourge of violence we face. We know what makes a successful family, and yet we excuse the behavior that hurts the family such as absentee fathers, women having multiple children to multiple men, romanticizing the "gangster" lifestyle, unwed mothers, lazy or nonexistent parenting and more. There is no shame in the community for doing things wrong, we just say that it is your life to live as you want and we should not judge. Standards that maintain good family units are not judgements, they are what make a successful family and community.
