On the contrary

August 4, 2013

A writer in a recent edition suspects that some of my fellow readers apparently live in some sort of alternate universe where President Obama, liberals and Democrats are responsible for all the evil......

Capricorn, I am in total agreement with your last post. We have serious decisions to make.

And Phil, as a side note (from sideliner :) ), sometimes the pendulum swings to the right, sometimes to the left. Certain areas need total conservatism and others need a more liberal approach. It is not always black or white, left or right, but usually a mixture of the two. Neither is the alpha and the omega. That's why cooperation, understanding, and empathy is so necessary.

Phil, in answer to your question, the direction in which I would like to see this country move is forward. I am not thinking in terms of left. right. capitalism, socialism, etc. I am not thinking in terms of political labeling when forming a judgement on a particular policy. Will it move us forward? Will it benefit us economically and socially? Will it be good for the long haul or is it a temporary fix?

We've got to get these ideological labels out of the equation as they taint our view. They remove objectivity. Those labels have us prejudiced before we read the first word of a proposal. As long as we look at possible solutions in those terms, we will get nowhere. That is at the root of the gridlock we face in Congress today. There is too much focus on the messenger rather than the message.

This board is a prime example of what is happening on Capitol Hill. As soon as we see a poster's screen name we make a judgement about content before we even read it.

Sideliner I agree and that's why I left the republican party and became an Independent. I am so tired of watching the bickering from both sides of the aisle and the public in general. Towing the party line has resulted in total gridlock and you have Fox News and MSNBC fueling the division of this country in the same way they are on Capitol Hill. We have some very hard decisions to make to get this country back to the great country we used to be and it's going to take everyone coming together and making sacrifices from both sides of the aisle. Until that happens, this country is going to decline even further.

The country is currently somewhere between a limited Constitutionally defined government and autocratic central planning; between Capitalism and socialism or fascism. Any “compromise” will move us one way or the other whether it fits your idea of progress or not. Which way do you want the U. S. to move in sideliner?

It's all about picking a side and sticking to it regardless of its impact on the country. It's all about being RIGHT. It's all about WINNING on a particular point. It doesn't even matter what that point is.

It is a sad state we are in. I see it here on these posts. Some here are just set on being RIGHT. No agreement with the "other side," even if a point is valid. Certain posters are just plain mean-spirited, name-calling, with no real desire for cooperation. Just being RIGHT. Just WINNING. But in the end, what is it that in won?

Phil post: "And what is that common goal? Do we come together and move the country in the direction of the left or the right?"

Why does it have to come down to "left or the right?" That sounds divisive, Phil... like one has to pick a side rather than just move forward in a positive direction for ALL of us, left right, middle, or wherever your point on the political spectrum is.

That type of thinking is at the core of the stalemate we are currently in. John Boehner couldn't even say the word "compromise" in a recent interview. He is so dead set against cooperation with this administration that even the word "compromise" couldn't come out of his mouth, let alone any action toward working together for a COMMON goal. As far as he is concerned, there is no common ground. As long as it is an idea that ISN'T the current administration's, whether it be good for us or not, that's what he will back. Period.

Cap, if we were to reach that goal which would be GREAT for this country one side would loose most of it's voter base.

As long as we have a side that promises goodies we will never see our way clear to a better future.

The goals I would like to see are smaller government, balanced budgets, deficit reduction and real unemployment reduction and not the false numbers that are being advertised. Maybe then they can reduce the growing number of people that are dependent on government assistance. Personally I don't feel those goals are unreachable. But obviously for those in leadership it's not possible.

And what is that common goal? Do we come together and move the country in the direction of the left or the right?

I think we're all at fault, the voters and the legislators. We have no one to blame but ourselves for the mess we're in now.

Congress is more concerned about fighting with one another on camera and pointing fingers, dividing everyone into "us" vs "them", and we've lost our way. We should be united, and moving together toward a common goal, but instead we're divided into groups, with each group pointing fingers and ridiculing the other.

We need to stop this before it's too late, if it isn't already.

Very true Mr. Miller, while Liberals believe Conservatives are holding up all their lofty goals I believe they are simply a speed bump that's keeping this country on life support.
