The Chicago story

August 4, 2013

There are more people on Welfare in Illinois than there are people working. Chicago pays the highest wages to teachers than anywhere else in the U.S. Averaging $110,000/year....

I live in Chicago... each morning, the opening story on most local news channels are the number of shootings overnight.. it's become the "normal" lead story.. shameful..and 99.9% of the shootings are gang related. 4 year olds getting shot.. grandmothers getting shot... 4 month olds getting shot.. just random.. there are 3 times as many gang members in Chicago (and surrounding Chicagoland area) than there are residents in the town of Williamsport.. wrap your head around THAT...I have no idea what can be done..

As far as the teacher aspect goes..they just laid off 1000 teachers and closed 54 schools due to reallignment..

On a lighter note - the Gov just held up the paychecks of BOTH houses in state capital until they pass a budget to deal with the state pension issues... it's a mess..

Be thankful, Williamsport, for the troubles you do have.. and do not have...

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, teacher's in the Chicago metropolitan area earned an average salary of about $57,000.

It's easy to find the $74K number all across the right wing blogs and then the correction pointing to the actual data on the left wing blogs.

Fact checking, try it sometime.

Well Jerry if CBS says 76K "before benefits" I would think 110K is not out of line.

Do you know what benefits cost?

The very first statement, the average Chicago teacher salary appears to be wildly inflated, by more than double.

I stopped checking there.

Whether it is a cut and paste or not, the facts are the facts.

redeyechicago dot com tracks homicides in Chicago. As of end July 2013, 204 of the 240 homicides listed on the website are gunshot victims. Another 15 were stabbings and sharp force trauma.

According to CBS Chicago (story dated 6/12/12) the average teacher salary is $76K per year before benefits.

And yes, they do have some of the most strict gun laws in the country in Chicago. Cook County implemented a $25 tax on each gun sold to help defray the costs of health care for shooting victims, but as we all know, the criminals shooting each other aren't buying guns legitimately through a dealer and paying the tax. That burden falls to the law abiding person who purchases their gun through legal means vs from the trunk of a car.

Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned last year, he's no longer the representative for that area, and is probably going to jail. He was replaced by Robin Kelly, who was sworn into office in April.

The LTE is full of errors. The underlying theme is correct.

If some of the more easily verifiable information and the spelling of names are incorrect, what makes one think the the point of the story is correct?

There is a point to the story, though, Chicago is heading down the Detroit path. Out of control crime, mounting debt, and people leaving because they don't want to live in a crime ridden area.

I agree with the copy and paste - at least make sure the info is right, and say "I found this at whatever dot com" so others can find it too.

....and Rod Blagojevich name is spelled incorrectly at both locations too.

A straight copy and paste, errors included.

Lol, it is such a copy and paste they spelled Rahm Emmanuel's name incorrectly, just like it is on every blog that this is posted on.

As soon as I seen "House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr." I knew this was another copy and paste.

At least you freakin' people could do was to verify your information to make sure it isn't out of date.
