Paying bills

August 8, 2013

Was that a joke or was Josh Brokaw’s article on July 22 (City woman asks landlord to lend a hand with water bill) for real? He did not say anything in his article as to why Marlene Cofer was on......

George, shortly our liberal friends will demonize you for being a mean cold hearted SOB that has no compassion for the disadvantaged.

And those people in wheelchairs you know that are still working because they "want to", well their just being selfish for making more capable people look lazy.

As with all Gov't. handout programs, there is going to be a percentage of fraud. Is the gov't. doing all they can to weed out the abusers?

Tgrammie, when the government can't control the fraud, waste and abuse within their own entities, it's impossible to expect them to control it in programs they "manage".

If this woman found herself in a position that she needed "temporary" assistance, there are many religious and charitable organizations that are available that may have offered that assistance. And Mr. Brokaw could have included those facts for the benefit of others that find themselves in the same position.

George is making a lot of assumptions here. The right believes them, they know for a fact that all the people being helped by a government program are lazy and shiftless people who are getting a free pass.

Perhaps a follow-up story should be done on this woman and her situation to answer some questions raised? How about it Sun-Gazette?

Reeder what I believe is the government has allowed these programs to grow out of control due to mismanagement and they continue to dump billions of dollars into these programs despite knowing that they are being abused ad the system is broken. I have NO problem helping those that truly need it. But the fact is disability, Medicaid and food stamp enrollment has sky rocketed over the last four years. How can this be when the administration is telling us that the job market is much healthier and the economy is much stronger? Either the administration isn't being honest or even more people are abusing the system. I think it's both.

Art, I don't disagree with you because in this day and age, there are a lot of skeptics, myself included honestly and you can't really blame people for being that way.

We're paying out all this tax money already for people on welfare and people reliant on government. The ones that are committing fraud make it much worse. I'm not by any means saying Ms. Cofer is committing fraud, I'm simply saying that none of us know her situation, so before we can make judgement, we need more info. Which is what we're asking for and I don't think that's unreasonable.

Chuck,"George is making a lot of assumptions here. The right believes them, they know for a fact that all the people being helped by a government program are lazy and shiftless people who are getting a free pass."

It seems like Chuck is the one making assumptions here. First he assumes that George is on the right, then he assumes that George is saying that all these people are frauds. It doesn't say either of those things in the letter and in fact the letter states that he doesn't want to assume that. Once again, Chuck demonstrates that he has the reading comprehension of a second grader (my apologies to any second grader who actually understood the letter).

George used Ms. Cofer to vent about people who abuse the system. He should be ashamed of himself.

Our friend from Morris. You may qualify for a disability since your life is apparently so compromised by this state of agitation you find yourself in due to circumstances you can't possibly have any control or knowledge of and involving people you neither know or care to know. Ms. Cofer is voicing an opinion to which she is entitled to. Your Morris related experiences have no validity here. You prejudice however is unfortunately fairly universal. I am hoping you may once again find escape from the torturous righteousness that consumes you.

Well George let me fill you in on some facts you are surely missing. First, someone who is on disability can't work without penalizing themselves. For ever dollar earned someone takes two from that person. So if they are having trouble existing on what they now get, they will have even more trouble existing on that new income. Also, not all disabilities are seen through others' eyes. I have RA and have had multiple surgeries on my back, arms, hands, wrists, etc. But if you saw me on a good day you would maybe not notice my distress. However, it is taking me forever to type this msg. due to my disabilities. But, you need to know that some of us are legit and did not plan for our ailments, especially if we were raising our children alone and trying to give them a good life. Hooray for you if you planned ahead and weren't divorced and life went the way you thought it would. Please walk just one mile in my shoes and see why I can't work even part time.

Voicing an opinion is now a crime? Explain what law was broken.

And I didn't know an attorney could "throw the book" at anyone. Isn't that left to a Judge?
