Folks,

Remember that very, very few people had cell phones when the program rolled out in the 80's. much of it was to support rural communications systems. The 90's saw some increase in usage but much of it was for businesses. Personal usage of cell phones climbed throughout the 2000's.

It is obvious that the federal government has promoted abuse of this system in the most recent 10 years. GWB and BHO should have reigned in the beaurocracy.

I never heard of the program until I saw the video with the lady from Cleveland talking about it. There are millions of things our federal government spends money on and most of us that work 50+ hrs a week and spend time with our families don't know of them. We expect our representative and their staffs to dig into these things.

Now that we are are of it, we should express outrage. Better late than never. Where do you stand on the issue?

"Silverfeather, The program was started under Reagan. It underwent some major changes under Obama."

Neither Reagan, Obama or Congress had anything to do with the free phone scam. It was started by the FCC in 1985.

Over the last few years, it has grown by leaps and bounds. Just more gimmee, gimmee, gimmee liberals wanting their free stuff. This has been the norm ever since Dumbama became president.

"I just find it amusing that "conservatives" only care about the deficit and wasteful spending when a Democrat is presidents." --BobGlass

Bob, I wrote several letters to the president and my representatives to balance the budget and reduce debt when GWB was president. I was very disappointed when the Republicans and Democrats went on the spending binge to funnel $$$$$s back to pet projects in their home states. Does "Alaska bridge to no where" ring a bell?

For 20+ years, I have written letters about balancing the budget and reducing the debt to my senators and representatives.

What is your opinion on these issues? Are you happy driving off the cliff as long as someone is sitting next to you? Or are you willing to say wrong is wrong no matter the political affiliation?

Bob, I believe they were called Obamaphones because of a viral video of a lady in Cleveland espousing the wonders of having an Obamaphone--as she called it.

KrazyK,"Enigma - off the meds recently? Can't make a point; resort to name calling."

What name calling? If you're referring to the pig thing, maybe you should have read the post to which I was referring. I have no problem making my point. My only problem is that liberals can't seem to understand any point the opposes their ideas. As far as the meds, I'm not the one who is admittedly crazy (that's the correct spelling).

Hypocrisy: Admonishing a person for name calling immediately after asking if he's off his meds.

This week a reporter obtained 3 also, clearly stating she was not entitled to access or food stamps, nevertheless, she received 3! This program not only costs everyone who does pay for a phone, but is a cost of over $2 billion to the government, i.e. our tax money. Also,

Yes yet another over the top $2 billion program used to funnel Tax dollars to the [ Cell phone ] industry.

Too me this reads like an elite welfare distribution.

Likely... this is more about helping the Cell phone industry [need the help or not]

Soooo who gets the phones is not important.

I'm likely wrong..... and it certainly would not be the first time....!

There's a CNN Money article dated 10/26/12 titled "Who gets rich off 'free' government phones" online. It's worth the read. Remember, this is dated nearly 10 months ago.

+ "The program paid out $1.6 billion last year, more than twice the $772 million it spent in 2008."

+ "Take a look at your phone bill and you'll see a charge -- typically a few dollars a month -- for payments to the "Universal Service Fund." That's the umbrella program covering various ventures, including Lifeline, that are designed to make telephone communications universally available to all Americans."

I believe you'll see this charge on both your landline and cell phone bills.

nosferatu,"Yeah, didn't hear these complaints then."

Were you listening back in 1985. I was young then, but I do remember hearing some complaints about this program. Of course the present day program bears little resemblance to the 1985 program and people weren't selling their phones to buy drugs and certainly weren't being told by those administering the program that they could do that. Because of the rampant abuse of the program, there are many who previously didn't object to it, who now want it stopped.

SilverFeather, most on here do not dispute the fact that Lifeline was not started by Obama. However, like every other government program, it has ballooned into a spending monstrosity that is being poorly managed. The deficit is off the charts and the administration is again making threats if congress doesn't raise the cap. Where does it end? When does reform to these programs take priority instead of continuing to dump billions more into them? I think so many are pointing the finger at Obama because of all the empty promises he continuously campaigns on. Yes, other politicians break promises, but the American people fell for his eloquent words and desperately needed the changes he promised. And all we got is more of the same; uncontrolled spending and massive government mismanagement.

Silverfeather, The program was started under Reagan. It underwent some major changes under Obama. I'm all for killing the whole program, are you with me? After all it was started by a 'stupid Republican'. You see unlike most Democrats, I understand that people in my party can do dumb things and when they do, I am right there saying so. If you read these posts regularly, you would know that I am no fan of how the Republicans in Williamsport are running things. Are you ready to stand up and say that this cell phone program is being poorly run under this President?

BobGlass, You are a liar! Real Conservatives complained about the level of spending under Bush. You probably missed that because you were too busy listening to liberal Bush haters. You are the one who can't criticize his own party, even in the face of undeniable corruption. Did you know that every 'Obama phone' makes money for a big Obama contributor? Do you care? That was the subject of the letter and you still have yet to give an opinion on it. I can only assume that is because you can't defend it, but you won't even admit that this is a problem. It seems to me that you are the pig in your metaphor.

For the Republicans making their baseless claims as usual and again looking like Bobby Jhindals "stuipid party" The Lifeline program was started in 1985. No Democrat anywhere near that date! Now, is there waste, of course just like the War in Iraq!!! Unlike Iraq, with the Lifeline program lives are being saved not senselessly wasted!!!

You people better start diggin'... for Ronald Reagan that is. He's the President that started the Lifeline program. Go to the FCC.gov website and check it out. We all know this paper does not want the facts out there, especially when a Republican is to blame, but facts are facts none the less and we must not continually allow the Republican party to look stupid! After all, you freed the slaves through Abraham Lincoln and we thank you for that!

Must be a bunch of Atheist out there because everytime I open my paper, yet another non-believer violates the sacred golden rule: “Thou shall not say any negative word about our Savior – Barrack H. Obama or his administration” So many to convert, so little time.

Bob, as an Independent I was just as critical towards Bush when it came to wasteful spending. As far as some of these things not being started by Obama, you are correct, but he ran on the platform of change and I have seen him put no effort into curtailing massive spending. He continues, and in many cases increases the amount of spending in government.

what a joke, Obama started this program so the poor could look for work...ha ha, that is so funny. He started this program to provide cell phones to those too lazy to work and to be paid for by you and I..same thing over and over again...he is a president that needs to provide as much as possible for the welfare class so he (in the last election) and his croanies in the next election) will be voted for by those same people. Let start a revolution of our own, the working class against the government and those too lazy to work.

E - I just find it amusing that "conservatives" only care about the deficit and wasteful spending when a Democrat is presidents. Remember Chaney’s old "deficits don't matter" line. I also find it amusing that "conservatives" always attach "Obama" to anything they done not like - especially things that offices under previous administrations (Obama’s deficit / Obama’s war / Obama’s cell phone). You can blame Obama all you want but that does not change the fact that the current administration was not the source / starting point for these items.

Oh well – Never wrestle with a pig because you'll only get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Well I have to get some work done. You can have the last word :)

BobGlass, You couldn't do it could you? You can't say that this waste of money is outrageous, because it has been connected with Obama. Would it help if I said it didn't start under Obama. Could you say that it is outrageous now, or can only Republicans do outrageous things. Be careful though, because all of these wastes you have cited have Democrat support too. Another blind ideologue.

Enigma - No more outrageous then today's article about the local "republican" government wanting to spend 3-million to help US Airways upgrade our local airport. Or the $100,000+ our Mayor spent on the Ice Hockey debacle. Let’s see some of our local conservatives be "upset" with all the "corporate" welfare that goes on in Williamsport for a change…

Can any of our liberal friends say that this is outrageous? You would think that we could all agree that with trillion dollar deficits that this kind of waste would be universally decried. It shouldn't matter if you agree or disagree with the principle of the program, it is being extremely poorly run. The money that is wasted here could better be used to reduce the deficit or on some other program. As for Jerry, news outlets all over the country have reported on the problems with this program, but he wonders if it's true. Another blind ideologue.
