Two thoughts: First, it is interesting that you focus on Zimmerman's right to carry a gun. I was thinking about Zimmerman's other poor choices as well as about his carrying a gun. Second, having a right is separate from when and how one exercises that right because that involves judgement. That is why, in my opinion, the local watch groups are distancing themselves from Zimmerman.

David, Zimmerman's choice to be armed is a personal one in which he did so legally and was protected by the second amendment. The Crime Watch Program is naturally not going to condone the carrying of firearms because they are there to observe and report. But it doesn't mean that those in the program are restricted from carrying for self protection if they choose to do so. The program can not dictate against something that is a legal right. When I was involved in the Program in MD, the police officer that was our liaison stated that "while it is not recommended to carry a firearm to carry out your duties of neighborhood watch, I can't legally tell you that you don't have the right to protect yourself."

"No matter how you view Zimmerman, the trial or the outcome, we believe there the whole affair stirred unfair questioning of a legitimate tool against crime." For that, I think the responsibility lies first with Zimmerman. One only needs to read the recent article in the paper to see how local crime watches have distanced themselves from Zimmerman.
